last nite i had a friend tell me when mig welding you just go in  a streight line insted of going in circles .im knew to weling ,so is this how everyone does it

i go 1 little circle at a time myself to avoid too much heat and warping and also move around on the panel for the same reasons

I don't think circles or straight is as much an issue as the size of the weld. Limit the weld to 1/2" long or so and move around the patch and weld different areas. Keep jumping around until you have a continuous solid weld. Try not to get any one area too hot.

As far as MIG goes I would go in a straight line but RodgerD is correct if you are welding sheet metal you want to do small zaps at a time. You should not have an arc continuous for any length of time or you will warp the metal. You may have to make a few small welds and come back to it in 15 minutes or use an air hose to cool it down. Using copper to back the welds helps produce a good weld without burning thru and it takes the heat away also.

Get a bunch of scrap pieces and practice a bunch before trying actual work and you'll get a wroking technique.  Welding is one of those skills that is best learned through use.
