I pulled mine off today to clean it up some, never took it off since I have owned it.  THe chrome is strarting to wear and all the black is gone on the ring and the flip top and the gasket is cracked,  just wondering if there is a service that does all this.  I could get away with just the paint for now until I redo the outside of the car but if I can find someone to do it I would get the whole thing done in one pop.

Thanks.
Over?! its not over until we say it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!...Hell no! and its not over now!..(Germans? Pearl Harbor?...shut up, he's on a roll)

Is it pitted?  If it is, you may want to consider the repops over repairing the one you have.  Even a straight forward replate would need to be done by a better shop that is used to doing pot metal.  I've seen quite a few of the trunk medallions on the fastbacks that were redone and they have similar ribbing to the gas cap trim rings and the replates I've seen all seem to lose a lot of definition around the ribs.

its really not pitted at all, the chrome is just dull and streaky.  The ring isn't as dull as the cap portion is.  The loss of definition is what I am worried about too.  My dad did the fender turn signal on his 67 and it lost a lot of difinition, I don't want to have that happen.

I don't know, unless someone chimes in with some advice on restoring that thing, I'd think about a repro.  I know they are supposed to not be as good (something about not springing open as well as the originals I believe)but for the price...
Get an estimate but I'll bet rechroming your original is going to be way up there.

subscribing,  have similar questions about my own.  chrome is marked like it has stretch marks on it, has some pitting on the cap, the ring is pretty good shape though, although it all needs extensive repolishing.  Took mine off for the first time since i've owned it.

I've never heard of anyone restoring one. I think the problem comes with there being two different types of finish on the top so it's not really cost-effective to restore them. I would get a reproduction one or find a nice one on Ebay. I got a near-perfect original for my '68 on Ebay for $75.

You could probably repaint the black areas and it would look a whole lot better.  Then you could decide if you want to buy a reproduction or get yours rechromed.  I did buy a reproduction and although it looks nice, it is not as high quality as the original.  One odd thing I noticed is that my original pops up when I push down the latching mechanism.  The repro doesn't pop up the same way.  Now I think the repro will definitely get the job done and I am very happy that reproductions are available.  Some might prefer your cap since it doesn't look brand new.  That seems to be an up and coming thing now according to the Mopar Magazines.

I think the repops look real good and you will get a new gasket with it as well.  It is more cost affective than rechrome.
