Ok.. since my 383 engine is bored .060 over i´m doing a "economy rebuild".. just to keep it running until I get the knowledge and money to build a new engine..
I,ve removed the cylinder ridges and got the pistons out today.. did some quick measurements and bore wear seems to be 0.005"..  Can I "get by" with this..?

Plan is to mount new piston rings and just hone the cylinders..

Found a honingtool with 3 types of stones..

Rough (120)
Medium (180)
Fine (280)

Wich ones should I use..?

get by for now o rget by whne using new pistons ???
for now it will run with .005 wear but on a rebuild for best results it will have to be bored probably .020 minimum
different rings use different grit stones to get them seated properly

Im asuming .060 is the maximum bore.. right..? Next step i sleeving...? And thats NOT an option, way to expensive
Of course this will not be a "performance engine".. First time I open up an engine and probably I will learn something..

Check with the ring manufacturer for a stone recommendation. If it's just a quick rebuild just hone it and run a plasma moly speedpro ring. Fwiw, there is .006 piston to wall clearance on my street/strip 446.  ;)

If you're just looking for a quick "rewind", I've had my best results by just scratching up the holes with the 180-220 grit, and buying some cheapo cast rings.

The cast rings(ductile iron top & second), are about the softest, and most "forgiving", and least sensitive to bore irregularities, or crosshatch pattern, for taxi-cab rebuilds, from my experience anyways.

Remember to clean the carbon from the ring lands on the Pistons, prior to installing the new rings.

Don't sweat the .005", it'll run fine.

Found this in a book:

Cast-iron or chrome rings: 280 grit stone
Moly rings: 400 grit stone

Rings; cast top & second ring = 220 grit

Moly top, cast second = 280 grit

1/16, 1/16,  3/16(moly top, cast/ductile iron second) = 400 grit, compensates for the reduced surface area than the 5/64" ringpacks listed above.
