I'm looking at buying a 74 Charger with a 400 auto(my favorite car) and I'm looking at bumping up the performance from the whoping 200 hp stock. I'm looking at buying a 440source stroker kit 400->500ci kit(flat tops-10.88:1 compression) with edelbrock Performer RPM heads, with a reproduction six pak kit. According to desktop dyno as a rough estimate with a .454 intake/exhaust lift cam. the engine should 405 hp at 5000 rpm and 526 pd. ft. of torque at 2000rpms. I know it's not exact but it should be close enough. I'm not sure whether I should just buy a transmission from say mancini racing(they have one for 850 bucks) or if I should get the stock one rebuilt.
The only part of the whole drivetrain thing I have no understanding of is the torque converter? Anyone have a suggestion of what I need?

Also whats the deal with the crankshaft is it internally balanced? would I need a harmonic balencer or whats the deal with that?

The 400/500 kit should be an internally balance type deal, therefore, your stock 400 balancer(external) & convertor, won't work.

Plan on purchasing a "0" , or "neutral" type balancer, and same "neutral balance" convertor/flexplate.
Common 440 "neutral balance" stuff should work fine.

Also, do yourself a favor and specify the kit with the Chev. 2.200 crankpin and Rod big end as this is much easier to fit in the lowdeck blocks. I believe it comes that way anyway, but just check to be sure.

Hope this helps.

did the 400 get a 727 or a 904 cuse the power was low? if its 727 id say use it 904 belongs on a leaning tower of power imo..............Mike

Nacho,
So my Satellite 318  could really have a 727? Is it a differnt version of a 727 for a 318?

Case is different of course to match with block size... dunno really if also some internal parts, like gears ratio, but definitelly 727 was available to SB. I know some 318 have them up there and in fact some member on board have it, and DEFINITELLY 340s and 360s were 727 optionlly equipped.

Here in Venezuela 71/72 Chargers were 318 4bbls equipped and they have 727. Rest of Dodges ( Darts, Coronets ) with regulars 318s 2bbls were 904
