Did I blow my head gasket?

OK, first mistake I left my battery connected for a week so ---- dead battery, after a jump my alt was making a grinding nose (sounds like bearings) but it was running great, I had to drive it to day. Well after driving in back home I was on it pretty hard  and at a light It died, 4 speed. So I jumped it and saw the engine tried to die when the electric fan kicked on so I unplugged it and drove home 3 more blocks and parked it in my garage. The tem gauge always goes off the roof when I shut the car down - I figured it was due to the water pump not moving. As I was unplugging the battery the engine sprain a big leak!  It looked like I was coming where the head and intake meat up. I tyred to put my hand in there to feel were it was coming from but it was to hot. The hole base of the intake is flooded in cooland and it spilled everywere. It wasn't a hose I checked. So what now?

I got a chrome radiator cap from pepboys, It has yet to open and vent, Could this have caused my problem?
My dad said its because the motor only have 150 or less miles on it and it sat for 3 years after being built should have torqued all the bolts after the brake in?????

What should I do, and should I just go to PEP Boys and get a head gasket set or should it be from jegs 10.5 compression 360 motor?

Mike, it sounds like you've got a leak on the intake manifold gasket...not the head gasket. Get a new intake gasket and some permatex "ultra copper" high temp silicone and go at it. Just snug the manifold down and let the silicone set up overnight then torque it down the next day. Make sure all the surfaces are clean and free of old gasket material/debris. That should do it.

Thanks, So will I have water in my oil?

TylerCharger69

wouldn't that be the valley pan  on a B/RB engine...and not intake gaskets???    Assuming it isn't a small block

firefighter3931

Mike, there should be no water in the oil if it's leaking at the intake. If you're curious, just pull the dipstick and have a look. If there's water in the crankcase the oil will look milky.

Tyler, this is a smallblock engine we're talking about. Last sentence in Mike's first post states 360 engine with 10.5 compression.

Thanks, I know I had a vally pan installed, so will I need 2 intake gaskets? or just one?

TylerCharger69

oops...my bad...i musta missed the last sentence.    A 360...You need two intake gaskets...I dont believe there is a valley pan

Tyler is correct....no valley pan with smallblock engines. The intake manifold is the valley cover. There are gaskets on the head ports and on the end rails of the manifold. One gasket on each side is fine Mike.

If it's leaking fluid from where your seeing it leaking I'm pretty sure sure it's a bad head gasket. Be happy it's not a crack in the head like I'm sure mine is.

Thanks, I said valley pan but what I should of sad was Morose lifter valley oil baffle, Part # 710-25150 from jegs. I don't know If I need two gaskets since I didn't put the motor to gether.

I tighten the manifold bolts and man were they lose  :flame: Cleaned up the fluid and took it for a test drive, then I could hear more air/coolant escaping my motor. Now my thermostat is leaking  ??? I have one of those chrome radiator caps 14-18 lbs on right now. Could this be to high? PepBoys Has a factory cap with 7 lbs (not cool looking tho  :icon_smile_dissapprove:)

I then decide to lower the front of the car a little to give it that stance, and noticed the 4 K frame bolts are lose and 1 is 1/2 way out?? :flame: :flame:  Then the car dies on me, it turns out ALL the wires came UN bolted off the alt!! I'm sorry but this scares the SH$$ out of me!

This is really the first time this car has been driven since I started the ground up resto 6 years ago. She has only about 25 miles on her right now

I'm putting locktight on every friken bolt I can think of now!!

PS I got pulled over for the 4th time in two week testing out the temp, and the cop told me she smelled like gas, my girl said the same thing but I just figured she was , a Girl  :icon_smile_big: I don't smell it and cant see any drips. But I do feel a little light headed?
Good thing I'm Active Duty Army or I would of probably got a ticketed each time

firefighter3931

Mike !  :o Are we having technical difficulties or what  Time to go over the car and tighten everything down. Are you using one of those chrome thermostat housings ? If so, get rid of it asap because they allways end up leaking !  :icon_smile_angry: A 14-16psi cap should be fine for the cooling system. Make sure your thermostat is opening up and the coolant is circulating.

All those loose bolts.....Probably the start of all of your grief.  I'd be going over that entire car with a fine toothed comb and making sure everything is secure and tightened to proper torque values. I'd start by re-gasketing the top end.  I sure hope your main and rod cap bolts are tightened properly.   All those things being loose like that.   Myself....I personally would tear the engine down and double check if someone else did the work and your noticing all of these issues just in case....it could save you lots of cash and cussing in the long run.

Thats a scary thought!  If the monkeys couldnt tighten the other stuff  then why would they tighten the important bolts!

:popcrn:     that is a bummer, why a new rebuild should have to be taken apart and re done, that is not right, I don't mean the advice to do that, but that you have to do that at all, they better not do that to mine when I get mine done   :icon_smile_dead: :icon_smile_evil: :icon_smile_blackeye: :'( :-\
   Good luck with that

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

TylerCharger69

Which is why  I assemble my own engines....that way  I'm very meticulous  and if there is an issue...I have only myself to blame
