Yep, that thing is ugly. and it sounds like it wouldn't be any fun to drive with its shiftless transmission. althought that Turbo Diesel sounds fun. for the record the pontiac vibe and that toyota matrix are the same car... made in the same plant in Fremont CA. i own an 83 toyota tercel 4x4 station wagon and i drove it into a dealer and they tryed to sell me a matrix. but my problem with the matrix as it looke like it would be with this "thing" is that they are built to be easy to drive and are thus not very ruged. they offer them with 4WD or AWD but i wouldn't trust a car that i can't shift in any situation where i would need AWD or 4WD.  it reminds me of the fact that the Humvees are all automatics because manual transmissions are to complicated to teach people to use... are people getting stupider??? If that thing was a true 4WD with a 6 speed manual and a turbo diesel it wouldn't matter how ugly it was i'd wanna drive it.
