Isn't it weird to see such a distinct line between the lights in the western and eastern US? That must be some sort of time lapse or cropped photo because there definitely isn't that much night time on that much of the planet at once.

Looks like civilization stops west of the Mississippi River.......  oh thats right, thats the great plains states where everyone is moving out of.

Looks pretty bright by my mountain, that's why Palomar was retro-fitted to be a radio telescope. It sees farther now even with the city lights screwing up the 200" lens.

It's a composite image, not a photo at all.  Like you said, the whole Earth is not dark at once, nor is it free of cloud cover.  It's purpose is mainly for promoting insight, not photographic acurracy.
