Ok all you internet guru's what is the best bang for the buck and what would suit my needs. I would like to have my own domain and space for my own use, to put school work, some photo's and the like on. It will definitly not get that much traffic but it will probably be of considerable size as most of my school work has papers which are about 40mb. Now my question what would suit my needs I make the pages in dreamweaver and use ftp uploading. What would be my best bet a linux or a windows server or does it not really matter. Ok pretty new to webhosting so forgive me if I sound dumb. All opinions will be appriciated.

www.fatcow.com  They are cheap and reliable. I have used them for about three years.

http://webhosting.yahoo.com

Lots of cool add ons and its never down.

I use them for several car clubs and small business.

Plenty of bandwidth and lots of storage space.

Easy to stack domains on to the same web site.

You can manage through web page or FTP client.

They have logging you can turn on and then create usage report so you can track web site tracking down to the picture and page access.

Works for me.

I use lunarpages (www.lunarpages.com)). They have a toll free number to call for tech support. I have used it many times and they were always helpful and I didn't have to wait forever to get a call answered.

I use GoDaddy for managing domain names but I haven't used their web hosting services. Haven't had any problems whatsoever and haven't heard of any from people I know.

Ok thank you guys, so I am ready to choose between the final 2. Fatcow.com and godaddy.com but I still would like to know why some hare linux servers and some are windows servers. I get the basics behind it but what would be the best for me? I will only upload images, .doc, .mpeg/.mp3 and .html files.

If your have cable or DSL check to see if your ports (80) is not blocked and host your own site yourself.    Go to TZO.COM   and spend 60$ a year and run the server at your house. No bandwidth or space limits.   If you dont have a 2000 server    get 602lansuite and run on your windows machine and have your own web and email.

Linux server hosting is usually cheaper due to the software being cheap (free). If you're just running a basic web site and won't need to do any configuration then either will work just fine. It would only matter if you are actually going to do any code or if you have to maintain the server (unlikely). Go with the one that has the best uptime and support services. Secondarily you can worry about how much space you get and the speed of the connection. You'll probably get stuck on a shared server which may have thousands of other web stes running on it so be sure to keep an eye on the speed and availabilty you were promised. If it gets slow or crashes often then asked to be moved to a new server.
