Do Trannys Match In '72 Chargers?

My brother-in-law pulled the engine and tranny out of my '72 Rallye for me. The engine matches but do transmissions match the car? If so, how do you tell? Thanks.

There will be a VIN or a partial VIN stamped on a pad on the side of the transmission.
