Think a guard rail MIGHT be a good idea. Then again it would help to increase speed which is not good. Thats one road the drunks should avoid, wonder how many vehicles fell off every year.

I think they need to invest in cable cars!!  :icon_smile_big:

Couple of years back, I sent a pair of Sterling LT9500 trucks powered by Cummins ISLs to Ecuador.  I ordered those trucks with hendrickson suspensions, Jake Brakes, School bus wheels, 4.10 gears and spec'd for extremely hard use.  The salesman said "I don't know what you're gonna use these for since I never sell trucks built for that kind of use."

I said, "these trucks will make a daily round trip which starts out at sea level and travels up and down extremely steep grades (9% and up) in the Andes mountains with no escape ramps topping out at a max altitude of 13,000 feet with a final destination at 9,300 feet.  Many parts of the road have not been paved in 30 years.  The total round trip is 16 hours and happens once a day.
I'm hoping the trucks last 5 years.

So far the trucks have exceeded everyone's expectations.

My dad was asked to drive logging trucks down in Peru and the road looked almost identicle. They were offering their drivers crap loads of money but people kept turning them down.

I have been on roads like that in my KW, but they were only about 1/2 mile long, they were that steep
but not that high. Going forward with the trainer was no problem, but backing that bad boy up on that narrow
of a road was interesting  :icon_smile_cool: :icon_smile_cool:  I drove for a large roadway contractor, delivering
equipment, I had to get in to so pretty crazy places. Some times the truck was leaning so much I was leaning
out the drivers side window a little to keep my body vertical  :icon_smile_big:  that was when the truck was empty.

No sense in getting tons of money when you won't make it a day or two past payday.

I wonder what the death rate for that road is, you can see several spots where trucks went over.

They're paying big buck$ in New Orleans, LA at the fast food chains to keep them open.  A bit closer to home and not as dangerous.   :yesnod:

I heard from a former LA resident that Wendy's was offering $10.00 to start, but you had to sign a contract for 6 months guaranteed employment.  :o

I went for work about 6 years ago in Peru.  We went west of Lima with some highway people to investigate some highways.  Our distance from Lima to our site was was about 180 km.  It took us about 6 hours to get there and the last two hours in the dark.

Talk about almost shitting my pants!!

There were many tombstones along the road where buses and/or cars had gone down the hill, sometimes thousands of feet!! :o

We did see one landslide on our way back.  People got out of the buses, ran across the affected area while the bus slowly manuevered around the fallen rocks and boulders!!! :o

It was an eye opening experience for me.

One weird thing is I never saw any accidents in the jungle mountain roads or in Lima, not one!! ;D
