Surprisingly, I am going to comment on a topic I would usually avoid. Even more surprisingly, I am going to throw in with the questionable avatar. For the record, I think the avatar is innapproprite because of its sexual innuendo. My thirteen year old son occasionally surfs the site with explicit instructions to stay away from the off-topic area. I would rather not have a "charged" avatar like the first one on view for public consumption. Rather bad taste and another sign of the growing apathy towards moral decline.

However, as a transplanted Michigander living in Savannah, Georgia I have some different perspectives on the flag. I am a northerner and will always be so but have chnaged my mind on the whole confederate thing a bit. The rebel flag and the "csa"represent more than racism to the people living here. While some are certainly racist in there association with the flag, most display the flag as a symbol of state pride. Not pride in a racist past, but pride in the home state. Even Robert E. Lee was against slavery. After considering fighting for the north he agreed to lead the conferderacy because of state's rights over federal involvment.

RD, my family is of Italian ancestry. While there are many diversities now, I find it a bit insulting for you to refer to yourself as a member of the "Kansas Mafia". The mafia in general, Italian or otherwise, are responsible for murder, drugs trafficing, extortion, etc for years. While you yourself might not associate with that behavoir, you certainly are tying yourself, albeit loosely, to an organization with a checkered past. How is that so different from your critisizm of his confederate (read southern) pride?

though I do not agree with you, if we were to argue semantics all day long, my rebuttal will be that the mafia members murdered all races equally, robbed from all equally, and extorted all equally.  I do not believe they discriminated, and if they did, it was not the mainstay of their movement.

now, since I am no longer talking semantics, who is to say I am not italian and I am not in a kansas mafia?

well, as long as it wasn't their mainstay...apparently murder, theft, and extortion are okay as long as conducted without discrimination. of course they discriminated. maybe not racially, but discrimination was abundant.

come on man.. are you arguing just to argue now?  let us not venture any further off topic in an attempt to prove who is right or wrong in regards to mafia vs. CSA.  It is like comparing apples to oranges.

The KEY issue here is the usage of an avatar that some members, to include myself, will find offensive based upon its oppressive overtones that are ever present in today's society.  The issue of the "stars and bars," and the following that uses such a flag, is a constant reminder of all the groups that use such flag in an effort to symbolize a movement towards discrimination, racism, segregation, oppression, anti-semitism, and hatred.

That is it, no hidden meaning there.  Case in point, replace the CSA with National Socialist party, and replace the "stars and bars" flag with a Nazi party flag.  Would that be acceptable for your viewing?  That is apples to apples in my eyes, just two different times in history.
