How to store windshield

Just wondering if there are any windshield storage no-nos I should know of. I put mine in the attic today laying face down on a shelf with carpet remnants between the glass and wood. I also put some glass foam on each edge to protect it from bumps to the corners. Are you supposed to store them standing on edge?

Shakey

I've seen them stored standing on the lower / bottom edge.  I have also seen them laying face down on a rack.

Sounds like it will be just fine up there.

Bull, laying flat is a definite no no...I worked in a glass shop for 6 months as a teenager and we were told to never do that. The reason is tension and torque. If the glass is laying flat then the weight of the edges of the glass is working against the tensile strength of the glass itself...not good. Glass should be standing on its longest edge stored at a slight angle (so it doesn't flop) with either the top long edge completely resting against a true flat surface or supported by multiple padded vertical posts that run from the base of the glass past the top of it. All my glass is in my walk-in closet sitting on the carpeted floor about 8" to 10" from the wall and leaning against the wall at the top (at an angle).Maybe the guys at the galss shop are full of it, but I've never had a piece of glass break when stored like this, but have had 3 windshields break when stored flat...  :Twocents:

Oh, well I better fix that then. What about a piece that's pretty flat and square such as a 2nd gen rear window? Can that be stored standing on one end or does it need to be on the longest edge too? I've got my rear glass in my closet standing on a side edge.

The smaller and flatter the piece the less likely it will stress crack while laying flat, but another reason I store mine vertical (on edge) is because I will be less likely to step on, lean on, stack on it later in a year or two when I forget it's there and need more space....I think you're OK with almost any flatter piece, my main concern would be windshields and any other curved pieces.
