Brake Light Surge

1970 Charger. When I apply brakes or turn on turn signals, I get a power surge it blows the 20Amp fuse. I have replaced the brake switch and steering column wiring harness. Any ideas on what next to check?

Look for a wire shorted to ground in the taillights  :scratchchin:

I would take apart the driver side kick panel as that is where the front to back wiring harness conects to each other and take it apart there
It will tell you if your problem is in the front half or back half of the car if you turn it on and does not blow the fuse again

Had the same problem with my '70 Charger. Never did find the source of the short and replaced the fuse with auto-reset breaker. Wiggling the under-dash harness with the brakes applied, I could hear the breaker click.

both turning lights ? or just one of the sides ?

on a side note, Brakes and turnings are on a diff fuse circuit...

That is an important point. If the same fuse is blowing by doing either activity, I would be looking for frayed wires in the rear wire harness for spots where the independent wires have insulation worn or frayed and the wires inside are touching each other.
