Help  i have my 68 charger survivor 383  74 k miles  all original internals  , with its original timing chain and gears  , I understand the cheap bean counters put nylon teeth coating the gears
I have my radiator out being fixed im thinking about doing the timing chain also as its a ticking time bomb im sure , Luckily no nylon chunks in the oil pan as of yet yet .  My question is this .  Is there a way of telling what timing gear set I need without tearing the front of the motor down first ?    Its a April 1st 1968 St louis build car with a 383 2 barrel . I would love to order a double steel roller set of gears and chain for it and have it on hand before tearing it down the rest of the way .  Do i need single bolt cam gear or a three bolt cam gear . ?   thanks  in advanced for any insights and help     Stuart

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

469 runner

I recently tore down the 383 from my 1968 Charger.  Single bolt, nylon teeth.  The nylon teeth were used for noise reasons.  It kept the engine a little quieter.  My engine was at 120,000 miles and the teeth were still intact.

I had a 318 duster , about 85,000 miles. Was running fine,  jumped time while cruising about 50 mph and bent a bunch of valves.  A friend had a 440 that clogged the oil pickup with nylon chunks and spun a bearing. IMO, any stock untouched vintage engine , regardless of mileage, should have that  "silent" timing set replaced.
