Use a .010 feeler gauge between the left tab and the handle while pushing in shifter. It's in the Service Manual.

So you don't pull the thin metal pieces out which I did when I pulled the handle out to begin with ?

In the past, I have always put the rubber insulators in the shifter body along with the metal pieces and then slide the shifter handle in.  The metal pieces will lock the handle in.  You definitely need the feeler gauge to remove the handle but I have never had to use one to put the handle in.  It should press in fairly easily.  A little WD40 usually helps things.
