Wiper pivot question

First off I hope everyone is staying safe...

I am tearing my wiper linkage apart to rebuild and I noticed that one pivot spins fully and the second one pivots partially with sudden stops on both ends of the movement... is this the norm or do I need to do something to the second pivot?

thanks and be safe!

If it's 69 and completely disconnected from the linkage then it should spin freely.  Does it look bent or damaged?

Puzbie

Yes it is a 69... I don't think it is bent, but the body shop left them in when sandblasting... I am guessing maybe that got media in it... :scratchchin:  The car has been parked since 90 (inside) and they worked back then  :shruggy:

Thanks for the feedback

Yes both pivots should rotate freely. After years of not being used, they tend to get stuck. There are ways of freeing them up. I took them and super soaked with WD40. Then started working them in by turning them in full circles. But sometimes they're beyond fixing if they are rusty/crusty/corroded.

That is what I did with mine.  Soaked them in wd40 for a week and now they spin like new.

[as a side note].. after soaking them in WD-40 and freeing them up, lubricate them with something else as WD-40 is not really a lubricant its more of a Water Dispersing solvent.

After you get them to move freely, it's not a bad idea to drill the housings and add a zerk fitting to shoot some grease into them.

I think sometime ago somebody posted pics about a service made on pivots, dissasembling and reassembling with service done

thanks for the ideas and insights... I have them soaking in evapo-rust right now although they really weren't rusty... WD-40 is next on the list...

What size drill do I use for the zerk fitting?  I also saw in a post of someone using heat shrink to cover the hole... does anyone know if that worked?

I just did a service on my pivots, by lubing and spinning them.

I'm sure they can come apart, but I don't think they're designed to be serviceable, with c-clips or the sort.......

Sure they are not serviceable, but can be done if needed. I remember the pics of that thread
