Decided to pull valve covers to clean and paint.

How do you get the stock breather cap off? Stock valve covers on 400 block.

Thanks in advance!

Pull it out. Seal must by hardened so could need to "jiggle it". Mostly sure, will need to replace the seal too.

I had to pry it up on my 74. The seal was so hard that there was no other way to do it. Then replaced the seal and installed back after a good cleaning and fresh paint

In '73 the "breather" pushes into a rubber grommet, the "oil filler cap" twists off.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I think is the same for BB and SB blocks, but here is the example... one for breather the other one for PCV
