4speed drive shaft question for 68 charger??

I started putting  my 68 charger back together & realized I have a problem. The driveshaft that I had, seems to be the wrong one. I placed the yoke in the transmission & tried to put the rear driveshaft bearing in place on the 8 3/4 ujoint mount. It is very close to going on(within a quarter of an inch, even less. Does anyone know what size the 4speed driveshaft has to be??  I have the rubber transmission mount facing the front of the car when mounted. Is this wrong or the right way to have this mount facing? I don't know how tightly fitting this driveshaft is suppose to fit when mounting it back on a car. What does not help is the fact it is a 68 charger with a 1971 4speed. The car was an automatic, so these parts I am using did not just come off the car either. I can not even find another dodge around to look at for reference. Any help that I can get would be greatful. Thanks

you should be able to slide the drive shaft into the rear end with out it hitting the rear end that should allow for eneough play

Ok I must have to play with the transmission studs on the mount. If I push the yoke into the transmission all the way back into the slot I can almost get the rear ujoint into the slot, but I am only off by so little. Thanks

With the car sitting as if it is on the ground measure from the end of the trans extension/housing ( NOT including the seal ) to the face of the rear yoke, where the U-joint straps bolt to, then subtract 3.5" from this measurment. Your driveshaft, when measured from C/L of front U-joint to C/L of rear U-joint should be this lenght. If its longer, which it sounds like it is, you'll need a diff. driveshaft, and try not to shove the front slip yoke in that far because it will ruin the seal. The shaft needs the extra space so when the rear goes up and down the slip yoke can move in and out and not bottom out in the trans and make a mess of things, good luck.

Thanks for all your help guys. I am going to measure the driveshaft tonight. I will have to find out the length I will need in a driveshaft. I know I had that information at one piont working on this project. I will get a picture of my crossmember tonight & attach it, because I believe the crossmember is off of a newer dodge. If I was smart I would of left the car automatic  :rotz:
