383 new rebuild break in question???

I have heard people say all different things about the best way to break an engine in. Do you need to drive it slow for the first 1000 miles or drive the engine like you stolen it. The changing of the oil how many times in this process would be good info also. Thanks to all

I was lazy and paid somebody to do everything when I had my motor done after I threw a rod on the freeway.After I dove it home I changed the oil right then, cause I want to put in a very good brand of oil and filter. If you do it your self you still might want to do that, it is good to do. If anything it might be a waste of money but it won't hurt it by changing it to much. Just make sure you pre-fill the filter with oil before you put it on. Was always told on the break in not to drive at a steady speed for a long time. Take you foot off the gas then on the gas helps the rings pull oil on them. Don't race it or baby it just drive it like -well not sure what to say- like you always do-no- maybe not .

Then take it out and drive it kind of normally for a while, but as javakmcharger68 said don't stay at one steady speed for a while. Then drive it like you stole it, take it on WOT runs up and down the highway, do some burnouts, etc.

I believe in working the engine hard so don`t be scared to floor it just don`t take the Rpm up to max for the first 500 miles , I try to keep it under 4000 rpm for the first 500 miles

Great adivice by all, my machine shop told me to break in the cam change the oil, then if possible take it out for about a 2 hour highway drive.  Basically going somewhere around 100 miles varying the rpm, but not going over 4k rpm.  This is not necessary but it is a good way to help break in the cam even further by keeping the rpm's up.

    Yup, if it's going to break, I want it to break while I still have my tools out...

The idea for changing the oil and filter after the first 20 mins. is 2 fold, get the break-in lube out of there and cut open your filter to look for any major metal particles to be sure everything is ok. As Chryco stated, run it hard, but not full throttle blasts, you want to keep the RPM between 2 and 4000 making sure that the throttle blades close completely between shifts to put back pressure on the back side of the rings. This is what really seats the rings and if done right the motor is good to go rather quickly. As also stated here, try not to keep it at a constant RPM for any lenght of time for the first 4-500 miles and your all done. I know it seems like a pain in the A** bringing it up and down like that but its truely the only way to "Break-in" a new motor and you'll be suprised how little oil will be used up doing this way because your seating the rings quickly, good luck.
