Since it's a lowly '74 with no VIN number, fender tag, broadcast sheet, the doors, wipers, heater, radio & headlights don't work, no interior, non-original drive train, & a bunch of missing part, I don't see it being worth a couple grand.

The same goes for that other 1970 Plymouth he has, but personally, I'd be willing to pay a few grand more for that car.

the 73-74 Charger body style was his favorite, but maybe not necessarily this particular car.  He probably still has a couple more stored somewhere.

Petty never liked the wing car era because their stability was so forgiving about driver mistakes.  It made his great skills less of an advantage.

The mid-later 1970s was also the era when the top teams were farthest ahead of the others.  That was a combination of resources and rampant rule-bending.


I've always been kind of surprised his 66/67 Plymouth wasn't his favorite.  That car gave him his biggest winning streak.

I always mention that whenever someone bellyaches about how today's racing sucks compared to "the good ol' days".   Just about every race ended with a Petty/Pearson 1-2 (one or the other), usually 2 laps ahead of 3rd.  Good ol days indeed...

I remember reading somewhere that Petty/Pearson finished 1/2 like 63 times. The Silver Fox won 33 of those and The King 30.

Memories.  Some accurate, some not so much. 

Actual results for the 1974 Winston Cup season: 

Petty won 10 of the 30 races. 
So did Cale Yarborough, 10 wins in 30 races. 
Pearson won 7 of 30, Bobby Allison won 2, and Earl Ross slipped in for one win. 

Trivia - Pearson did not drive Ford, he ran a '73 Mercury, and Allison won the last race with an AMC Matador.

I should add that 1974 was a great year for Richard.  He was the Cup points champion, easily topping Cale.  Even though Cale also had 10 wins Richard had far more points.

Richard's 1974 season included 22 top five finishes, 22 of 30.  It was his 5th championship of the 7 he would eventually win.

I think the museum also owns a '72.    Don't think there are any more 74's in hiding there.      It's a big fish to let go, even with a small block.

It seems like the Petty family was done with NASCAR once Adam died.  It just took another 10-15 years for everything to wind down.

Damn you had to go and ask.  The answer is non-Mopar.

Richard's best earnings year was 1979.  He won 5 races, the first at Daytona, in an, cough cough, Oldsmobile.  The other 4 wins were in a, arrrghhh, .. .. .. .. Chevrolet.

1979 earnings total for 31 races was $561,000, easily his best year for money.  The prize money throughout NASCAR had grown exponentially in the '70s even has his wins were fewer.

If he had stayed with Mopar then he would have finished his career in a #43 minivan.  Probably about 50 laps down.
