A 1970 440 RT Charger with an automatic and 2.76 gears good for only 131 mph??? I can honest say that the spedo was on 145 when my buddy, (RTDaddy on this site) said "watch this", and put it the rest of the way to the floor. Nothing like being an invincible teenager.
To top it off his Dad saw us get out of the car with big grins while the car was making noise from the exhaust cooling down and took notice of the dent in the carpet under the gas pedal.

I had a 70 r/t also w/ 2.76 gears that also saw 150 on the speedo, and had the speedo gear from the 3.23 gears still there, so I figure the speedo read slow by gearing. Do I think it did 150, dunno because I suspect speedo error. I do know the front end was floating and got light enough that I needed both sides of a 2 lane road the way it was drifting. Hell ya it was dumb, but 17 year olds are dumb, and there isn't much traffic @ 2am where I grew up in North Dakota. Had a lightly warmed up 440.

I use to cruise with the speedo pegged back on ZERO... 2.94's in my Bee and the "for 3.23's" gear still in the trans. All I know is them black LTD's didn't go as fast...   :icon_smile_big:

It used to be the norm to see what a car would do on top end within a week of buying it. Fatalities were also much more common back then.
