I was trying to get my 73 charger started after redoing the engine compartment. Was cranking but not starting and I noticed that the battery cables became very hot from just cranking.Anyone got any ideas what would cause this? All ignition parts are new.

Without to be there to check how much time you have had cranking or how hot is the cable, I would say is normal get a hot positive lead up to starter motor, specially if you try to crank several continuous times trying to start the engine without succes.

Starter motor is the higher compsumption electric device on all the car, and in fact you can get a complete discharged battery if you try to start the engine for about half hour

Check your owners manual ( if you have it ) and there makes reference about try to start the engine several times without succes and let to rest the system.

was only cranking for about a minute, car was cranking a little slow, my battery is new but was wondering if the new starter might be bad or a poor connection somewhere would cause it. The cables were hot not just warm and both pos and negs were hot (battery was cool) All my other ignition parts are new.

Resistance makes heat. If they were real hot then there are problems I would say. Are they old cables?  Might have the blue death corrosion creeping along the copper inside under the insulation.

positive is original with new end on it, neg. is new. I need to go thru and check but was wondering if anyone had any ideas to look at first.

It sounds like damaged rotor on starter motor, but if is new, I don't know
