Whatever the numbers are, I'm sure it's low, but in this case low production numbers does not translate to desirable.

No, that information is just not accurate.  I know of two of them up in SD sitting on a rural farm area and I seriously doubt that they are included in those numbers.  Ten years ago, I used to own a rough yellow version.  It was registered with Wayne Wooten of TDC before I traded it off.  Wayne had more than three of those (1968 Charger 318, 3-speed column manuals) registered back in 2006 when I got his handwritten reply on my car.  Dodge did not keep records on the 318, 3-speed column manual nor the /6 version from that year.  My best educated guess is probably 100 to 200 of those were made.  Maybe 25-50 are left in any condition.  Unfortunately, rarity does not always equal valuable.  It also must be desirable.  Not many find the 3-speed column manual desirable over a factory 4-speed floor mounted version.

If I had to guess they probably made between 500-1000 of them and another run of similar numbers for slants.
A 3-speed is only available on the column and a 318 is a go to small block.
Nothing about that combo is strange if you look at it at from an economy buyer perspective in 1968.
I would be interested in whether they made more slants or 318s with a 3 sp.

That is a good question.  I pondered the same thing with other Mopar people that I know and we never could reach a good answer either way...

the 3-speed manual column-shift transmission was the STANDARD transmission on the base V8 (XP29F8 * 318) & base /6 (XP29B8 * 225) 1968 Charger

an automatic (904) transmission was OPTIONAL: $206.30 for the 318 & $?? for the 225

there were around 2,300 U.S. spec. 1968 Chargers w/the 3-speed manual column-shift transmission

if one of the OPTIONAL 383s (383 2bbl/383 4bbl) were ordered a 4-speed manual (PP833) or automatic (727) must be ordered at additional cost

since there are < 1,000 Chargers w/225 & > 33,000 Chargers w/318, I'd bet there were more 318-3speed manual combo '68 Chargers

 ;)

the guy who told me that was on face book "mopar mike" i was curious as to
how many were manual transmissions?
how many were factory 4 speed manual and
how many were factory "floor mounted" 3 speed manual

but as some have stated there has to be more than 3. That number in a base unit was probably much higher
