New to car restoration world

Hi guys . I'm new to this car restoration world and I'm start by saying thanks in advance for whoever takes time from their day to help me out with advice . I bought a 70 Charger and the tag that is supposed to be on the fender is gone and I'm trying to figure out everything about this car . The dash is loose and looks like it was removed or it's a replacement. So truly I'm not sure about much about this car . I'll post pics of this rough old girl tonight and show what I'm starting with and hopefully I'll be able to do it all myself . With the help of you guys would be greatly appreciated. With that said , where do I start looking to find out if I have a special find of a charger?

Without a fender tag or a Broadcast Sheet/Build Sheet that matches the car's VIN you will know very little about the car.
There are two places to look for the VIN stamped in to the body metal. There is no use to tell you where they are till we see pictures
of the engine bay and trunk opening. Then again you may already know where to look.

Welcome to the site Tyler D. You will find a lot of knowledge here. And posting pictures can be a bit of a bug, but don't worry, you will get it all figured out. If you are having trouble, There is a site here explaining how to post pics. It is mainly the size that matters, so resize and post !!!!

To figure out if your dash belongs to the body you'll need to match up the last digits of the dash VIN to two locations on the body.

First is on the core support, either on the top just next to the radiator or on the vertical face of it on the engine compartment side.  Not sure if you'd need to remove the radiator to see it if the latter.




The second location is on the trunk rail lip on the driver's side under the rubber gasket.



If the dash VIN doesn't match the body numbers then the dash was taken from another car.  The factory sometimes missed a body VIN stamp, but if the car has had some bodywork done in either area a patch panel could also be the reason for not having a body VIN number.  If the body has two different VINs then it's two cars put together in some way, maybe just a panel from a donor car.  The combo breaker would be all three locations having different VINs!

In 1970 the basics of the VIN are:

XH29 is base Charger, bench seat, no upper door pads
XP29 is Charger 500, this is the 'standard' Charger and is not special like the 1969 Charger 500.
XS29 is Charger R/T available with 440-4v, 440-6v, 426 Hemi
