I know later on, 426 hemi cars recieved the dual-pulley alt.'s... Was that the case as well in '68?....

Thanks,

a road test of a new 68 HEMI charger in a (march 68 road test magazine) shows  a small picture of the HEMI under the hood  you can just see :scope: a single grove alternator pulley, hope this is of some use.
Feel free to post any relevant picture you think we all might like to see in the threads below!

as far I know, double grooves alt pulleys are only for A/C cars... why an Hemi would need a double groove alt pulley ?
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

The double pulley alt. usually had a higher amp. rate for a/c cars... With the hemi, some years is was standard to put the higher amp alt. with the hemi, hence the double pulley. I know some years did have the double pulleys....... maybe '70 and '71.......

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I thought alternators were dated by the week of the year, not the day of the month??   :shruggy:   :scope:

I bought one a week ago that was dated the 22nd week of '69 for my Daytona which was built the 24th week of '69.  My original (and now crispy) distributor was dated that same week also.

Hey Geno: What does the date on this mean?...

Troy,

I think that means 18th week of 1968, unfortunately.  That's April 28th thru May 3rd, if my calendar reference is right ( April, 1968 Calendar ).

There is one on eBay right now that is dated before your car's build date:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ALTERNATOR-2642537-MOPAR-DODGE-GTX-HEMI-440-DART-RT_W0QQitemZ4626415692QQcategoryZ80735QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It is dated the 41st week of 1967, which is October 8-13.  Not perfect, I know, but it is prior.  MMC Detroit ( Link )  says that the alternator should be dated 120 days prior to the build date.  That 41 67 date is less than 140 days prior to your build date, so that's within reason.

I found out about a month ago that the alternator I had stashed away for the Daytona was the wrong part number, even though the date code was perfect.  Before then, I didn't even realize Mopar made an alternator with a lower output than 37 amps.  The 2642538 alternator I bought at Carlisle last year is an A body 30 amp.  It's only one number off!!

Your call, though.  If you've already rebuilt that 18 68 alternator, use it.  You already know that dates don't make 'em run any better   ;D

Hope this helps!

Geno

Yeap !!!  Hey, did you get my PM? I feel bad I haven't gotten that hood seal to you, but this house hunting has blown up into potential lawsuits !!!!  But, I'm not backing down and I found through OUR leg-work our perfect house with a 4-car garage already !!!!!!!  Now, time to sell ours..........

I think I'm going to send off the alt. to Totally Auto or someone who does alt's.......

Here is the reference Dave Patik gave me for alternator rebuilders.  Can't speak for their work, but it might give you one other place to check with:

A & S Rebuilders
(815) 626-8949
http://www.rebuiltalternator.com/

Another reference I had found a few years back:

Yesteryear Antique Automobile Parts
http://www.car-nection.com/yesteryear/

In my book, it's a whole lot easier to find someone to rebuild a component than it is to find the component.
