Accurate "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" Build Question

I have been slowly gathering up various parts for my DMCL Charger build. Being OCD about little details, I want it to be as accurate as possible. Since the car was repainted 1971 Y3 "Citron Yella", my question is... what are everyone's thoughts on the engine bay color?  I know they never showed the engine bay during the movie so any answer would be "correct".  I'm sure that most people just paint the engine bay Y3 but in reality... for the movie cars, it was probably just blacked in... if they even did that much. Just wanting to get some thoughts...

I think it's most likely that the engine bays of the original 3 cars were whatever color the donor cars started out as.

Why bother painting an engine bay that would never be seen in the movie?

The only way to be 110% accurate would be to find the vin/fender tag of one of the original movie cars, and duplicate that. But since none exist (as far as I know) you can do whatever you like.

My vote is to match the exterior. I wouldn't want to look at a mismatched engine bay.

All the models (diecast etc) of the car at the time have it as black under the hood....maybe they knew something we don't!

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

on the DVD  cover ,  a 68 is shown with the door jam / door shut , painted   what looks like citron yella   , also the same area on one of the 69s with front end damage ,  when Deke is changing the wheel , will do a few screen captures later  :yesnod:

**EDIT**   just remembered , Bert ( modelmaker)  on here  , had one of the real DMCL cars , pretty sure he said it was light yellow originally  , :scratchchin:

I wouldnt be duplicating crapping short cut work.  they probably rattle can painted it black just to get it covered so it wouldnt be noticeable that it was a different color from the yellow.

if accurate means accurate, you going to go so far as to duplicate how they threw these cars together?

Chargen69

if they indeed never showed it in the movie you should do what you think you can live with  :2thumbs:

I own a General Lee that was used in the 1997 and 2000 Reunion movies and then reused in the 2005 movie. I've seen firsthand on how tv and movie cars are thrown together. I will not be reproducing the low quality aspects of the build. The DMCL replica will be nice. No, it will not be a concours restoration.  I'm fully capable of doing that, but I don't want to... not with this car. I want to drive the car.  I just want the details to be correct. I have the correct gutter mount antenna, CB radio, correct vintage US Mags center caps, etc.

I'm kind of leaning towards the black engine bay, but I could go either way. The engine bay on my screen used GL was painted black. Sometimes I just feel like a GL or DMCL clone with a matching engine bay is kind of over-restored.  But I know... some people like that and it's totally a preference thing.

At one time there was a guy on here that used to own one of the movie cars right after the movie was filmed. Maybe you can ask him about under the hood if he's still around.... :shruggy:

Yes, I know I have too many cars. My wife reminds me daily.

RCCDrew

My understanding is that the DMCL movie cars were even different from each other. So accuracy is in the eye of the beholder.

CornDogsCharger

Well it looks as though the underside of the hood and the top of the headlight mounting panel were painted yellow.  This is the same way my GL was painted, and the rest of the engine bay was blacked in.

How nice would it be to know a crew member who worked on the cars?!  Over the years, I've read all of the DMCL posts that I can find on here.  They've all be very helpful.  I might be going against the grain a bit here, but I'm not completely sold on "modelmakers" car.  If his was "THE" R/T, then I think there had to be more than one '69 R/T used..... which I don't believe.  Just my opinion.

It was probably black. I don't like that choice either, but at least you won't confuse the Chevy guys...

FastbackJon

You could make it match the 1:18 scale model and go the extra mile to match the same air cleaner, engine color, spark plug wires...

I can see the black would be a good idea , kind of , if a quicky color change back in the day was done  , good chance they would have left  under the hood  , then the owner would have/ may have  blacked out  the original color  under there  :shruggy::scratchchin:

imo if I was doing a DMCL clone  , would paint every where with Citron Yella  :yesnod:

I agree, but that is where I'm torn. I'm not too crazy about the car looking like an over-restored replica. Oh well, I'll ponder on it some more make a decision before I get ready to drop the 440 in.
