Ok, took the general out for a ride tonight and it sounds like the right front is coming apart.  I have lifted it and moved everything i can think of and can't find anything wrong.   maybe the idler arm could stand replaced but this is rediculous. it sounds like if you had a strut bad and it felt like it was punching the hood everytime you hit a bump. new ball joints, repacked wheel bearings just for grins, it feels tight(normal wear).  it's driving me nutso :flame:
it's banging like it's a solid metal thump if that makes sense.  anyone got any ideas. and it's definitely right front.  :shruggy:
this should be so obvious it's so annoying but i'll be darned if i can find it.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

How are your shocks?  Broken torsion bar maybe?

torsion bar doesn't look physically broken, how would i know otherwise?
i was gonna start with shocks cause they are cheap.  any suggestion on a shock to use cause i wanna do this once.  i will eventually replace everything in the front but money dirves everything, and i got none.
thanks for the response

Make sure the bottom shock bolt is tight, had one loose and the shock bounced on the bolt.

i'm pulling it apart again tonight, i'll be checking the bolts as you suggested. thanks

Check your motor mounts.  When does the car make the noise?  Turning, stopping, fast or slow.

no special time, speed, stopping turning doesn't matter(for the front end noise anyway, cause i'm troubleshooting a brake noise in the rear also) it makes the noise going onver bumps and such just normal driving.  kind of like a bad strut would make on a newer car. checked motor mounts but i'll look again tonight.
thanks

Sounds like a broken or loose bushing. Like a loose or broken shock. Have you checked the transmission mount? It would also be a good time to check the drive line and U joints while your under there. Allthough I don't think thats the problem. :scratchchin:
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

If the torsion bar is broke, you would know it as the car would be sagging on one side.  Chances are it is your shock if you mainly feel or hear the clunking noise when you hit a bump or go over a hill in the roadway.

ok it looks like the winner is whoever sad shock.  when i took it apart originally i neglected to move the shocks but the bushing is half gone and it moves pretty free.
i don't want to send trophies premature cause i had to order the shocks from summit (replacing all 4)
but i'm guessing that is the issue, i'll let you know.
thanks for all the help and suggestions.  now back out to rip the back left brake apart and try to figure out that clicking sound when i apply.  anyone got a backing plate fpr a 69 they want to get rid of?
