Wow they totaled them a mile from the dealership.

What is there to say?  No brains and no skills.

Too bad they won't have to pay for the cars.

They might get held responsible for the damages on paper.  But there's no getting blood from a stone.  If the court garnishes their future wages it will just kill their incentive to work legit jobs.

Those were $70k cars.  The basic bodystyles were common domestic stuff.  They weren't wrecked hard enough to do any real damage to the drivers.  And yet 2 of them aren't worth fixing now.  It's a testament to how unrepairable modern cars are getting.

As far as the dealership is concerned, they are totaled because if repaired, they just can't sell any of them as new. The insurance company will sell them as salvage & someone will repair them.

I watched that local news report about this the day after it happened.  Apparently a dealership employee "just happened" to be driving by the dealership... at 1:30am   :o    and noticed lights so they called the cops.  The cops couldn't have been too far behind since they caught the guys after chasing them down on foot.

It also said they recovered "3 of the 4 stolen vehicles" - which only included 2 Hellcats?  I'm not sharp enough on modern iron to tell what they took just by looking at the footage they show.    :shruggy:

Good point.  I forgot that a dealership will elect to 'total' a vehicle quicker than other owners would.

On the other hand the news story said "at least two of the cars were totaled" as if the dealership wasn't sure about the 3rd.

More good points. The whole story does sound a little strange.

But these things often are strange.

With as difficult as it supposedly is to steal new cars these days, these geniuses sure seem to have made quick work of it. Bummer about the cars. :rotz:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

ACUDANUT

Looking at the suspects, I am shocked. :icon_smile_cool:

Moe & Larry & Curly must have gotten the keys when they broke in.

I have a neighbor that works for a major salvage yard here in Spokane.  They regularly get brand new cars that may have sustained minor damage during transport to the dealership.  They get them at highly discounted prices, but must tear them down to a pre-approved level and sell them that way.  I've seen them selling brand new Corvette rolling frames with complete drivetrains.  They were not cheap, but what a foundation for a hot rod!!

I wonder what a wrecked Hellcat would go for?  Imaging poaching the driveline and tossing it into a B-body  :2thumbs:

I wouldn't use the OEM electronics, that's for sure.  Not after all the crap they did to the General Mayhem on Roadkill just to make its Hellcat motor run.  Modern steering column, pedals, gas tank, taillights, etc.  That was less like an engine swap and more like hanging the entire 2015 Hellcat's hardware on the '68 sheetmetal.
