Hopefully someone with experience will respond.

What is this bar welded to the rear axle for? Is it a factory item or did someone put it there for whatever reason? If it's factory I'll leave it but if not I'll cut it off and grind the welds smooth.

I have a ford 9" behind my shop. I'll go look and see if mine has it. But I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Mine is out of a 68' bronco, what's your out of

I'm pretty sure it's out of an Australian Fairlane.

I bought it second hand to replace the Borg Warner axle in my Fairlane. I can't think for the life of me why it would be there but I know as soon as I cut it off I'll realize that I shouldn't have.

I thought that it might have been a brace to help secure the Ford "tramp rod" bracket, but it looks too far in for that.

lukedukem

Ok. Just checked mine and it's not there. But who's to say it doesn't go there. Maybe for the fair lane it is

Acts as a shield for the brake line below it?  I just looked at the 9" in the neighbors '65 Falcon.  Nothing there like that.   :shruggy:

Might be a guide for a parking brake cable.

I think I'll cut it off now and figure out what it was for tomorrow.

440

Well, I found proof that the factory put it there for some reason.

lukedukem

Wow, did you cut yours off. I wonder if they all got that and mines just missing.  That last pic doesn't look like a ford 9". But I don't know ford all that well

I've never seen the bar on a 9 inch so that's why I asked about it. I was going to cut the welds and knock it off but it looks like it's supposed to be there, so I'll leave it there.

The last pic isn't a 9" so it must be a Falcon/Fairlane thing.

So I've stripped the paint off the 9 Inch ready for paint and decided to check the torque on the carrier bolts as I will replace them one by one. Most specs that I've read call for 30 - 40 ft-lb, however, when I checked a couple they were just shy of 10 ft-lb.

Can someone confirm the proper torque for a standard carrier to the housing? I don't want to over do it either and warp the housing or carrier.

67tbird

Carrier to housing stud nuts 30-40 for 67 9" according to my tbird manual.

Thank you, I'll torque them up a bit more then.

Looks good. What gears are in it?

Thanks, gears are 3.5 with limited slip which should hopefully wake the car up a bit going from 2.92.
