Preparing for body...Paint?

Putting together the body requirements. Gonna clean undercarriage w/ oven cleaner, wire brush it, apply Rust Mort (rust converter) and finish with New Hampshire Oil. Got the Makita big bore 5.2 gallon/3hp compressor with added receiver tank (7 gal) for 6.9 cfm @ 40 psi. Using the Anest Iwata lph400 134 lvb (purple for fine metallic, and lowest cfm they carry). Gonna stay with B5 Blue and am just now ready to find the right paint brand/maker. Yeah, I might have done this before choosing the 1.3mm needle, but that was according to my borderline compressor system, so if this limits my paint choice then I'll have to go accordingly. (Going w/ base+clear) Thanks for any recommendations.

edit: How important is it to stay original to the color? Asking b/c I just saw a rare LL1 paint from '68 that is great and would be even better with our white vinyl top

Code LL1 Medium Dark Turquoise Metallic. Already been on the phone with BASF/Glasurit which has a huge inventory of old codes, including the EB5 Bright Blue of ours, so chances are they'll have this too.

Unless its a one off Hemi numbers car color choice is up to you. I haven't used an Iwata hvlp gun so I can't say anything on the  nozzle/needle size. Both of my guns are Binks and 1.4 is about as small as you would want to go and the nozzle is larger on the clear gun. When I did my car it was a 95 degree day with slow reducer and I was soaking the clear it to keep it wet to get it smooth to the point I had a tidal wave across the roof BUT I was in a down draft which has a strong air flow. Depending on where you spray it, air flow and the temperature will effect the finish. If it is 60 degrees you will have an altogether different situation than at 90.

I guess it's pretty standard for 1.3 for base coats and 1.4 for clear, with 1.8 for primer, but I know a lot use either 1.3 or 1.4 for both, with water based bein on the higher side. The company actually emphasizes the atomizing ability of the 1.3, and I don't need to go fast as in production work. Also read that we wanna stay at least at 70 degrees air temp. And yeah, I'm seein a lot more freedom for color choice. We'll still be close. Think the vinyl top will grow on me too if I get it the right shade. Thanks.

So you are going to use BASF ? Is this an overall ?

Yeah, think I have to go with Glasurit after seein a green one that just knocked my socks off over at the 70 Registry site. Don't like green but this one definitely did it. It hasn't been painted in 25 years and has some bubbling in one spot, some micro-blistering in another from the car cover, and the trunk floor has to be patched/replaced. Won't know what it needs til I'm in there. Wanna strip everything short of the engine bay--that was just done with the rebuild 1k miles ago. I'll be at it all winter. Just getting my spray setup goin, ordering my welder tomorrow. Itsa first for me doin any of this but I'm stoked. Dealer Demo says they'll mix anything so I'm gonna opt for that LL1 Medium Dark Turquoise Metallic--think it's just what the white vinyl wants/needs, and will probably lay a darker base under that.

You should practice spraying something other than your car the first time out

it is too easy to rush the paint or give it just a little more to make it extra shiny then you end up with a big run
Takes a little self control to get it just right and you will not know how much is too much paint until you have done too much paint  ;)
Try painting your lawn mower or just some 45 gallon metal barrels

Absolutely. I'll probably be lucky to still have a good filter after all the practicing I'm intending. Trying to find the best setup w/ high flow couplers. Everything I can do efficiency-wise for our small-ish compressor will help. And will be trying our old hot water heater for a receiver tank. Thanks.

With a small compressor your air pressure might fluctuate, like slowly lower as you spray. LEON.

The gun operates at 14 psi drawing 8.3 cfm and atomizes optimally w/ a 1.3mm needle which we're usin. Think Awata is the lowest operating full size HVLP available. Compressor gives 6.5 cfm @ 90 psi, 6.9 cfm @ 40 psi, and hopefully even better @ 14 psi. Three hp and 140 psi. Have 25 gallon tank and 3/8" line from 1/2" pipe on the wall, with an efficient gauge filter (10 micron) of 3/8" that's only supposed to sap psi by 2. Only about 15 feet of pipe and 25' hose. Did all I could to maximize the system overall and will have the wall gauge and gun gauge to play with. It hasn't been easy tryin to figure out the dynamics involved but I'll let you guys know. Needed 110 so goin to a bigger $1k+ compressor was never an option. Any advice is WELCOMED (as in I'll beg if I have to). Thanks

When/if you spray a whole entire car with that compressor you may find out what I'm talking about. LEON.

Laowho

Oh definitely. I'm Planning on sectioning. Gonna be a matter first of finding out how far the 25 gal tank will take me before the compressor even cuts in, and then of seein what it sustains and how well it can do that.

Oh...you mean the part where they lie about hp and cfm? Think we'll move up to the 5.5 hp 14 cfm with the outboard. Thanks LEON

Gonna ask my wife and tell her she can pick the color.

I have an Eaton compressor. They are awesome! Mine is this one (but older when they used to paint them in custom colors):
https://www.eatoncompressor.com/piston-compressors/industrial-series-5-10-hp/industrial-5hp-2-stage-single-phase-80-gallon-vertical-air-compressor

It supplies a LOT of air and has continuous run capability. I haven't used it much for paint yet.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Well LEON, Troy,

This is why we joined the forum I guess. Good news is I found a 220 box buried in her laundry room...Bad news is this is a 30 amp outlet, and biggest breakers here on this 30+ year-old house are 40 amp. And kitchen outlet breakers are 15, but the microwave will trip it on occasion too easily for my liking, all of which adds up to no electric compressor for us as per Eaton's lowest power option, probable insufficient wiring here, etc. But Eaton also has the portable gas 5.5 hp  V style so that's what we'll do. Many many thanks. Goodonya LEON for callin us out--my homework ain't what it used to be, or I'm rushin things, or most likely both.

Our Pneumatic Plus filter/regulator just arrived and itsa beaut! Since we're runnin gas figure I'll get one more...now that we have the power to splurge. Also arrived yesterday are the primer gun and a siphon media-blast gun for small spots.

hemi-hampton

Smaller compressors are good for pumping up bicycle tires & Footballs or Basketballs but not good when running a 8" hog over your bondo'd 1/4 or priming or painting entire car. I had a 220 line put in my garage just for my Compressor. Dug the 3 foot deep trench from house to garage myself. Luckily uncle is a Electrician. LEON.

Laowho

Electrical terrifies me, but the trench I can do. We've got a great electrician who we called--he knows the house--and we're lookin at a $4k starting point to upgrade. So before he hung up he said don't use the toaster. Funny guy. So now I'm Googling Franzinators.
