Just noticed that after running around town for awhile the rear end feels real hot to the touch. Are they supposed to get this hot? It is a fresh rebuild with new 3.23 gears.

what are you running for gear lube?

comet_666

Not positive. Ill see if I can find out. I assume there are different ones?

Depending on how you are driving, an axle gets warmer than you'd think. There is a lot of work being done there. It can be quit warm to the touch after a good drive. I wouldn't worry about it unless its making noise or lurching.

totally agree!
new ring and pinions will be warmer for some time 'til "broken in"
But yeah, I used to drive 65 miles to the dragstrip and then change the pinion snubber, almost burned my hands more than once!
probably normal, especially this time of year.

comet_666

Well that's a relief!  Thanks guys!

That's normal, if it was getting real hot it would blow oil out the vent tube.
