Hi Guys
I need help choosing a replacement cam for my combination.
I currently have a hydraulic with a noisy lifter so i really want to go
with a solid flat tappet. What would you choose?
My specs are
440 stock stroke
6 pk rods
SRP forged pistons
10.4:1 comp
source alloy heads
1.6 crane rockers
comp cam flat tappet hyd 224/230@50  508/511 lift
pro max 6 pack top end
firecore dizzy with rev n nator box msd coil
23 degrees initial timing and 32 total, this is what the engine liked, no difference at 34 or 36
HP exhaust manifolds with TTI 3in exhaust

727 stage 2 with 2400 converter
8 3/4 with 3.23 gears

thanks in advance

When using a restrictive exhaust system (manifolds) it's important to keep overlap low to allow the engine to exhale properly. The wide lobed 112* LSA cam profiles are what work best. The MP 528 solid flat tappet cam would be an excellent option for this build given the mild stall and 3.23 gearing.  :2thumbs:

The mp 528 is a nice cam and i agree will make great broad power here. What pistons are you running because with those 1.6 rockers, you will be pushing .550 lift. Its also an older grind so they have loose lash settings. Around .030 if i recall so it will be "noisey"

The MP528 sounded good at first until you mentioned lash is set 28/32 thou (looked it up)
I don't really want a noisy valve train. I don't mind a little.
Can you suggest another cam or I could get a custom grind to suit.
thanks

Any mechanical cam will have clatter. The lash numbers on their card is the reccomended starting point. You have some room to adjust depending on what your car likes. The tighest mechanicals ive dealt with are in the .018 to .020 range. There is still some clatter but its not bad, nothing like a collapsing hydraulic. I wasnt trying to scare you out of the mp cam, just forwarning that it wont be silent.

The nova has a big mech bump stick in it, set at .030, you can tell its mechanical, but its not obnoxious. Can hear it outside, but not inside while driving. 2nd video, while taken of my car, was recorded from inside the nova.

I will definitely think about.
You guys dont think 241@50 is too big for my package, i ust want to make sure
before i commit to it.
thanks

If your 10.4:1 was measured and confirmed, then you will be fine.

Sneezi,

The 241@.050 might seem big on paper but after you factor in lash the cam is a lot smaller duration wise. I would set the lash at .024 intake/exhaust to allow for thermal expansion of the aluminum heads.  :yesnod:

The 528 is a nice grind with manifolds...it works very well. Several years back I specced a build for a member who has almost the identical combo as yours.....440 6-pack with Eddy heads, manifolds, mild stall and 3.23 gears. I also suggested a 1.6 rocker for Don's build and it has worked out great for him. Excellent drivability and brutal tire frying torque....he loves it.  :icon_smile_big:

You won't be disappointed with the 528 solid.....just do it !!!!

I allways recommend taking the time to degree in a camshaft.  :2thumbs:

With that cam I would install it on a 108* intake centerline.  :yesnod:

Hey Guys.......in particular firefighter3931 and c00nhunterjoe
I finally got the cam you guys suggested.
Question is on the summit website its listed as a 241@50 but the paperwork
from mopar performance says its 244@50.
Should i be rethinking things??
I attached a pic of the sheet, its p/n P4120659 cam, not sure if it worked.
thanks

Consider a PM if you're looking for one or two peoples response instead of insulting everyone else on the site.

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

sneezi

Why would anyone be insulted??
Anyone is welcome to comment, I just mentioned those
2 gentlemen for the reason they may still be familiar with my
Combination and asked me to keep them updated.
Sorry if you feel offended.

That makes no sense.

Don't be sorry.

I took it as worded directly towards me and ron as well.

Regardless, always go with the manufacture's cam card. Summit, jegs and any other source of the like has tens of thousands of cams to advertise. Cant get every ad right.

Thanks c00nhunterjoe....
So I should be OK to install it in my
combination.
Thanks again
