Crazy block id number

I've got my hands on a 440 block, with the id (on top behind the water pump) says: "9T440 E" next line "7 28". From what I've found online, there were no 440's for the 1979 model year - or do I stand corrected? Is "9T440" saying its a truck block from a '79 model, built on July 28?

A T after the year stands for the Trenton engine plant, a T after the displacement means truck. Although there were officially no '79 440's you'll find lots of blocks stamped '79.

9T440E

9= 1979
T= Trenton engine plant
440= Displacement
E= Cast crankshaft
7 28= Build date, July 28 1978 (it's got a birthday comin' up)

Thanks John. Guess I found one. Just curious tho, why would it be stamped for a '79? And isnt 7/28 just before the end of the 79 model year production run? Perhaps it was the last 440 remaining at the factory - maybe its historic I know its not ...

By that time, "E" in that position with that format stands for cast crank as John posted above.

A 69 engine would be stamped E 440.

From the 440 Source website:

"In case you have heard that 440's were discontinued in 1978, this was for cars only. 440's continued to be offered in trucks and motorhomes all through 1979, and we have had many 440 blocks stamped with the 1979 model year on them."
