I know very little about building engines and wonder what more knowledgeable members think of this 383 combo in a street car driven regularly in the summer on pump gas. The engine was featured on Engine Masters and won over a Chevy 383 stroker. The face-off is on youtube.

In your opinion, is there anything that they're not saying about this engine? The low-end torque would suggest to me it would be a nice 383, but again, I'm don't know enough about engine building. Isn't that a lot of carb? I've got my 383 yet to be built and I'm gathering ideas.

Advertised piston compression and actual are 2 VERY different things on a 383. Verify compression height of the piston before purchase.  2nd, stock 906s on that setup wont put down that power in my opinion. It will need headwork. I would say that build is closer to 390hp and it will be revving alot higher then 5400 at its peak.
In comparison, my old 383 was 30 over, 10:1, more cam and similar heads, same intake. I didnt make 450hp.

That 383 (394) did make a ton of power, I don't know if there are more details about it anywhere...

I've always been curious as well, My 383 is .030 over / 906 heads / manifolds I'ts pretty mild. I haven't had many 383's but man they do rev up !

What he said.

Oh the land of grossly happy dynos.

Does anyone even make a shelf piston for a 383 that will achieve even 9:1 CR with a 90 cc 906 head?  Maybe a dome TRW/Speed Pro piston?

Best bang for your buck, IMO:

Speed pro 2315 piston
E-Street Heads
Cut deck to achieve zero deck (will require a cut between 0.015" to 0.020" on an un-cut deck)
230° ish cam

Watch piston to valve and CR.   It will be close.   No fuss no muss with respectable performance. Still won't be 450 hp.  Feels like 1.1 hp/cuin package, at best.

Your 906 heads will cost more to make them "good" than the E-Streets.

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
