My niece called me yesterday about her old grand cherokee making a ticking sound. My first thought was that it had a busted piston or a bad lifter since the 4.0's are bad about either one of these after they rack up a couple hundred thousand miles or something close to that. She brought it by today and it wasn't noisy at all so she said that it only makes noise in gear. I dropped it into drive and there it was "click click click click" As for the engine it was very quite and this noise seemed to be coming from the bellhousing area of the transmission. I dragged the jack out and jacked it up and dropped the little dust cover just to see if I could see if the flexplate was cracked and check the torque converter bolts. turns out one of the torque converter bolts had backed out and was hitting the plate between the engine and transmission. I was surprised that it was that easy of a fix but relieved at the same time. Tightened up that loose bolt and check all the other ones, put the dust cover back on and that was it!! No more noise now, be nice if all noises were this easy to fix!!!!
