383 motor can someone tell me what I have

I got this motor half apart like it is now (block date code 9*26*66 or 68 not sure on last digit)
Looking at the pistons I would say the numbers mean they are 30 over ?
Does any one know by the rest of the numbers what the pistons are ?

Turning the pistons over they come pretty much flush to the top of the block

Looking the motor over it seems that there is a small mark from the intake valve on each piston as in things ran a little too close (or over rev ed  ;))
Maybe that is why it is apart

I have a 69 Charger looking for another motor and it was born with a 383 originally so was thinking about rebuilding this one for it

So what heads would I need to find that would have enough clearance and run on premium pump gas ?
There is no cam in the block
When I got this motor there was a set of 452 heads all rebuilt which I assume were from this motor (they are on my 440 now)

Sublime,

The pistons are forged Speed Pro 2315's and are .030 overbore meaning the block is now at 4.28 inches or slightly larger to account for piston to wall clearance. I like those pistons....very durable and can take a beating !  :2thumbs:

It looks like a valve kissed the tops possibly from valve float due to over revving  :scratchchin:

Would be nice if the bores were not too oversized and you could get by with a freshen up ; new bearings, quick hone & fresh rings.  ;)

That would be the plan is to just freshen it up and put it back together

Is there any head to avoid for clearance reasons ?

Another question will all the parts off the front of a 400 motor fit the front of a 383 ?

The D indicates the series (model year) 1968.

BSB67

On an uncut block those pistons should be about 0.015 to 0.020" in the hole.  Like Ron said, keep them if the block cleans up nicely.  Measure the actual distance down in the hole, machine the deck/gasket match for 0.040" head clearance with your favorite closed chamber 75 cc aluminum head.  That will be one snappy little 383 combo, everything else being right.

All of the factory heads are fine....I'd look for a set of 346's or 452's with hardened seats for unleaded pump gas usage.  ;)

Yes...all of the 400 accessories will bolt up to the 383 block  :2thumbs:
