I know most of you really hate both but I can't afford the nicer set. So does anyone have any  experience  with  either  Summit or jegs headers I'm putting them on a 73 charger 440 I'm looking at the  ceramic  on both

I just tried the Summit headers, ceramic coated, last summer.
What a crap. Hitting everything possible even on the passenger side.
After massive massaging them with a torch and a big hammer it still was not good enough.
If attached, there are some spark plugs you can´t remove anymore.
It was totally fail.
I ordered Dough´s headers.   :2thumbs:  And I wish I would have done this first.
Lessons learned.

Beg, borrow, cajole, do whatever you have to do to get quality headers that won't require a series of hammers to get them to install.  You do get what you pay for, here...

Has anyone tryed the block hugging headers?

I could probley afford this pair TTI shorty headers # TTi 44025-C1

The cheap 1 3/4 heddmans fit my car perfect with the auto. Passenger side didnt even require lifting the engine. Power steering has plenty of room, never burned a plug wire. Stock starter. They dont fit as well with the 4 speed, since the bellhousing is wider, the tubes touch it on both sides and also contact the stock starter. Still fit without a torch or sledge and when i bought them, they were 110 bucks. I havnt priced them in years.

Do you have a 73 ? And was your car an orginal 440 car or a 318 car like mine? Thanks  man it seemed like there would have to be someone who where able to put budget headers on without a huge pain. And do you know what model headers you used

The 1 3/4 headmans seem to fit everything  :2thumbs:

I have a set sitting in the garage that originally came on my car (68 Charger) and I installed a set of TTI's when I rebuilt the 440. A buddy needed a set of headers for his 73 Cuda so I lent them out and he used them for a couple of years. He pulled the 440 motor and sold it so the headers came back to me. About a year later another buddy is putting together a 66 Charger and back out they go....they work on his car as well. Just last year he decided to go back to HP manifolds and guess what....those headers are back in the garage.

Both of those other cars were original smallblock vehicles with transplanted 440's and the Headmans did the job.  :icon_smile_cool:

I was going to buy the  ceramic  headers but I heard if you have a fresh built motor that hasn't been broke end it could miss up the coating, any idea what causes this and is there any truth to it?

Mine is also a factory 318 car with a 383 now, 69'

See what others say, but I suspect this happens when the timing is out (not sufficiently advanced) on initial start up.  I installed a cam (the first and only time I did), and on the 20 minute break in had the headers glowing.  The ceramic discolored a little, but still appears to be intact.  The engine has since been rebuilt correctly and I am running those headers.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

I put Hedmans on my 318 '69 this year. Figured I would go cheap as the 440 will get dropped in eventually. I was shocked at how nice the Hedmans fit. The only problem I encountered was the stock sized oil filter didn't fit. Had to change to a lower profile filter. The rest was absolutely perfect.

We have a 383 '69 that has Hedmans on it for 10 years. They seemed fine, but they were installed elsewhere..was never sure if it was a difficult job.

I bought a set of the hedman ceramic coated headers last year for my 440.  I had the engine rebuilt over the winter. I put it all back and broke in the cam with the ceramic coated header , its all I had !.

I didnt' have enough timing when I got it fired up initially  ( had 20* at 2700 RPM ) This caused my headers to get red hot before I had a chance to throw in some more timing.  The result was the finish on my rear 2 pipes are cloudy now.  The rest look the exact same.

If I had more timing in at start up I don't think I would of ever had a problem  :Twocents:
