Broadcast Sheet Tire/Wheel Code Questions..

My car is a 383 4bbl, 727 auto car. Looking at my broadcast sheet, I have the following codes for the wheels and tires. On line 2, the code for the tires is U64 which is f70X15 fiberglass according to the decoder sites I have used. On line 4, next to Wh Cov is the number 86. On line 10, there is a code W23 which is for road wheels. On a base Charger, what wheel would have been offered that was 15 inches? I was under the impression that 15 inch wheels were only used on R/Ts. What does the Wh Cov code 86 mean? When I bought the car, it had 14 inch Magnums with trim rings (which I believe is the replacement for the recalled magnesium wheels). Does that mean my car could have had the magnesium wheels and had the 14 Magnums installed after the recall? Just trying to figure out what my car originally had or could have had...

Thanks

Nothing in the Y section of the broadcast sheet. What do you mean by SPD???

hemigeno

"SPD" is Mopar-jargon for "Scheduled Production Date", or the date that Chrysler initially alloted to build the car.  It was established days/weeks in advance of when the car actually rolled down the assembly line, so the SPD can vary greatly from the actual "build date".  Technically it is the first three digits of the full Vehicle Order Number (a/k/a the Special Order Number) printed towards the top left of your B-sheet, and it is never referred to as the "SPD" by Chrysler in any literature that I can recall seeing... but in general, it refers to the approximate timeperiod during which the car was planned for production.  It's also stamped on the Fender Tag, towards the right side of the second line up from the bottom - adjacent to the rest of the Vehicle Order Number.

Would it be possible to post a copy of your broadcast sheet?  If you run into problems, feel free to email the photo to my profile email address and I'll be happy to resize/rename & post on your behalf.  I'll even black out the VIN sequence # if you'd like.  To answer or clarify a couple of things:

Sales code W23 in 1969 referred only to the 15x6 Cast (aluminum) Center Styled Wheels... commonly referred to as the "Recall" wheels.  These were cancelled from production & recalled in early/mid September 1968, hence the interest in SPD (see above).

Code 86 under the "Wheel Cap or Cover" column of the Broadcast Sheet is a reference to 2944086 - which is the part number for a brushed stainless steel trim ring specific to the 15" W23 wheels.

I haven't seen too many broadcast sheets for W23 cars which weren't either an R/T (XS or WS) or Charger 500 (XX), so there are some questions I have about axle & speedometer pinion combinations which could be partially answered by looking at your sheet.

With this combination, I initially expected to see something different for the speedometer pinion than "32" - which is what the chart calls for if the same car had F70x14 tires.  Puzzled, I looked at a tire height chart (linky) and it turns out that F70x14  and F70x15 tires are only 0.1" different in height.  Not enough for a change in the speedometer pinion as I had mistakenly thought.

Regardless of my misconception, that's a very nicely equipped car.  R4 Red with Red interior is NOT a common combination.   :2thumbs:

Also... If you hadn't figured it out already, your car's SPD of August 29, 1968 made it under the wire before the W23 wheels were recalled.  It's quite possible it left Hamtramck with the W23 wheels still installed.  Below is the memo where dealers were instructed to replace the W23's with W21 Chrome Road Wheels before delivery to the customer.  That's probably how your car was initially sold to the original owner, unless it was built/shipped/delivered to the customer before the Recall took effect.  Stranger things have happened, but that could explain why your car now sports a set of W21's.

If you haven't seen it before:
