SEM paint on grille users, did you use a clear?

I'll be painting my grille soon and I'm probably going with SEM trim black and SEM titanium metallic as several people here have done.  I'd like both the black and silver to have a minimum gloss to them and having never used the silver I may want to spray the grille with a satin or flat gloss after spraying color.  Has anyone done this or did you simply use the colors only?

Any have pics of this combo by the way?  I'm not really married to the stock look and would like a darker silver, maybe something closer to stainless.

I used the SEM Trim Black only, nothing over it.   I like the finish.

The silver I used was spot on for factory, but I have a '68......was '69 the same tone of argent silver?   I can't remember.   :scratchchin:   No topcoat on my silver either.

Cool Thanks!  No clear it is.   :yesnod:

I can't find anything when googling that silver though, where did you find it?

Exactly right.  I don't know what any of the codes mean, hopefully your local paint shop can reproduce the product for you.   My paint counter guy and I spent time just going through paint chip books, and this is what we came up with.  The silver tint is right on, texture is smooth, the size of the metallic flake is accurate.

Granted, the original silver on my grill was 40 years old when we matched it, but I took a piece of the grill with silver paint that was protected from the sun and weather....hopefully it had not significantly changed over the years.   It's close enough, I recon.

Dino, thanks for posting the question, sparked my interest in completing this restoration on mine!

Heavy Fuel, thanks for providing the link to your restoration! That grille came out looking great and is exactly how I'd redo mine as well! :) I may have to give this restoration a thought for my 68. My Charger is restored except for bodywork (which will be quite awhile later due to rust) so the grille restoration could be a nice project to complete on my own in the meantime!

Johnnycharger, any pics of your grille with the paints you used?

It is quite dirty. I just got back from driving out to pick up my son from school.

Thanks heavy, I'll drop by Painter's Supply with the info and see what they can find.   :2thumbs:

Thanks for the pics Johnny, that trim black sure looks good, I love how it lays but have only used it on a few small parts.  Is your grille not bolted to the frame there??

I made some abs slurry with acetone and started repairing the missing pieces.  I hope to have the center section glued back in place and all the missing tabs repaired this weekend...but t's gonna be cold so I may not

Tomorrow's the last day with temps above 50 so there goes the window for painting.  I'll make a small booth in the garage and fire up the heaters when I'm ready.  The grille frame is finished as is the hardware so I'd like to get the grille done and bolted to the frame.  That way I can hang the entire thing in the shed, this grille is big and is taking up my entire work bench!   :icon_smile_big:

No problem. The sagging is where there are some "tabs" and no place to bolt it. I think I may have to put some 3m VHB there but I get worried because it is so fragile.
Speaking of using the trim paint over large areas.... I used it to paint the whole car lol!
