Can someone tell or show me how to determine if she came with power disc brakes?  She was born a 383, 2 Bbl, 727, A/C, non P/S car.  No build sheet. She has a booster that looks like A1 Cardone. Have to stand on the brakes to get to stop. It has discs front and rear now.

I don't think the fender tag would help much, 69s show B51 for power brakes and B41 for discs but I don't think this was true in 70.  The booster should be a Bendix but of course that could've been swapped.  I'd look for the proportioning valve and distribution block.  Maybe those are still original and could give you a clue.  If it is a disc brake car it would have discs up front only by the way, they didn't come with rear discs.

Thanks Dino,

Yeah, the same codes applied to the 70, but are not listed on the fender tag.  The booster looks like ones I have seen in pictures of other Chargers. The Cardone booster is listed when you try to order a replacement part at Auto Zone, etc. I tried twice to get the booster on the vehicle, but each time, the one I received would not fit.  The shaft connecting to the brake pedal was different than the one on the vehicle.  The boot covering the shaft was a larger diameter and would not fit the firewall mount.  There is a proportioning valve but I think it is for the rear brakes.  Can anyone out there tell me if it is unusual for the car to be ordered with A/C, power brakes, I believe, but not power steering?

Thanks

Dino

The aftermarket boosters require enlarging the hole in the firewall.  I'm not familiar with the rod issue.  Either way, your current setup could've been added after the car was sold so that doesn't help.  There should be no prop valve on a drum brake car, only the distribution block with safety switch.  Again who knows when it was added.

I've seen stranger combos ordered on a car.  I'm not sure if it's unusual.  Maybe the buyer tried the power steering and didn't like the high assist?   :shruggy:

Pics would be helpful.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

For awhile, I fought a condition where my 4 wheel disc setup felt less effective than it should have. I felt like an idiot when I finally realized that all along I was using a disc/drum proportioning valve. A 4 wheel drum or 4 wheel disc car needs NO proportioning. It should have a "distribution block" that merges and splits the system, but internally that block should NOT do anything else except activate the BRAKE warning lamp.
