strong fuel fumes

This weekend I added some fresh gas to the car to get gas into the fuel lines up to the front of the car, that part worked fine, when connecting the fuel line to the hard line at the pump, a small amount of gas spilled out, mainly on my hands, not much showing under car at all.  However,  after the car has sat in a closed garage for a few hours, the gas smell in there is very strong.  I don't remember the car ever smelling like gas when filling it up before, did I forget to hook something up on the tank install? is there a loose gasket tot he fill tube? I'd hate to have to take off the fill tube just to check, but i'm getting a lot more fumes around the underside of the car than I should be getting.  It isn't enough to catch fire, because I smoke in the garage and didn't die yesterday or today in an explosion of any sort, but I can smell fumes and it bothers me.

I also remember fuel smelling a lot better in the old days of leaded fuel, this new fuel stinks to keep dumbasses from drinking it, I say let em die off, stupid genes shouldn't replicate.  I'll admit to brain damaged genes for smoking in a fumed garage.

I would also check the fuel neck where it connects to the quarter panel as well as the seal in the flip cap.

Lord Warlock

checked fuel neck and odor isn't coming from up top or the cap itself.  Odor is strong sitting by rear right wheel, wondering if the seal around the sending unit is allowing seepage.  Need to recheck it I guess, getting it to turn and tighten was tight when out of the car, makes me lust for a Lift.

Or a split in the rubber portion of the fuel hose back there.

The tank vent tube is on the drivers side, it's connected to the near top of the filler tube and runs down into the frame inside the trunk. You may have slopped some fuel into it filling and it's puddled inside the rear frame to stink things up. Put out your butt before you open the trunk to look!

Lord Warlock

Think I remember someone saying smoking around the gas tank is a no no growing up, thought about the vent tube and it looks ok too, wasn't getting any odor even with cap open, but even with a couple days of airing it out can still smell it so will have to get underneath again to verify things, hose should be ok, its new fuel hose, fuel line is new, tank and sending unit are new too, Only thing old really is the motor but didn't want to mess with a 69k original mile motor.

Not seeing any wetspot under the car anywhere, so makes me wonder where its going.  don't want to go underneath again, not yet at least. Need to remove the right rear wheel and secure the fuel line inside wheelwell.  I may be able to see something.  May be a few days.

Last year i had the smell of gas in my charger after looking for quite a while i found small pin holes in the filler tube where it goes though the trunk floor to the tank put in a new one and i have been good since. :2thumbs:

When I put in the new tank, my original filler tube had the factory gas cap lock stuck inside, so I took it out and replaced it with a non stock polished unit.  As soon as I got the filler tube out the gas cap lock fell out onto the floor, so now I have the original and the replacement, and the replacement looks too nice not to use for the time being.  It was supposed to have a new seal that fit into the tank, I was surprised when the filler tube went in and actually fit inside the trunk and the end went inside the tank where it was supposed to, also put a new rubber gasket inside the trunk floor.

I'd have to agree that the lock seals aren't perfect fit, with the rubber gasket in place I couldn't spin the ring to lock it in place using just hand power, had to use a screwdriver and a small hammer to get it to turn, I may not have moved it far enough to lock properly, I was just under the car last week and didn't notice the gas smell while under the car, but later the odor accumulates in the closed space. I've been opening the garage door to air the fumes out during the daytime, but can't leave the door open at night, bats birds and rats like to enter if the door is open for too long.  Rats I can kill, birds I can shoo out with a broom, but bats can get out of reach and are a pain to get out, they can't figure out the open door very well for some reason.  Since they are about the only thing around here with rabies I try to avoid them if I can, had one get in and stayed for a couple days, till he crapped on my rear glass and trunk ...and got evicted.

Lord Warlock

water heater is in the front garage, and is electric, no gas appliances here.  Still getting whiffs of fuel when sitting next to the car, but haven't crawled under it to look either so will probably stink till I figure it out.  Physically not up to it this week.

Finally broke down and tracked down the leak, jacked car up high on right rear and fuel was pouring out running off the top of the flange on the edge, so it appears it is the filler neck gasket that fits on the tank itself that is bad, will have to take the filler tube out tomorrow and see if  the seal is in position or if it has been pushed out of position.  Lowered car on a stand for now to reduce fuel loss, garage reeks. No smoking in there tonight.  I was able to secure the fuel line behind the right rear wheel, now I can put the wheel back on and lower car level again, wasn't leaking heavy when level.

Is there a way to tell how far to mount the tank in position in relevance to exhausts or other undercarriage? It may be up too high.

Saw another thread on here that ended up with the filler neck, itself, being corroded enough under the gasket that it rusted thru the metal.  No other solution except to replace the filler neck.  Good luck on yours.

Lord Warlock

I doubt it is corroded, it is a new gas tank, and its only had gas in it now for a little over six months.  It may be pinched weird, or the seal may have fallen inside the tank when I put the filler tube in.  I am pretty sure I used a new seal on the tank.  I should find out when I get the filler tube up and out.
