Piece of caulk in the engine bay - what's it for?

There are two dabs of caulk on the pinch weld where the firewall meets the cowl and I have no idea why they are there.  The picture shows the one over the heater tubes, there's another on the other side of the firewall.  What's the point of these??

 there are holes  directly underneath in both  , I assume to align  the cowl & firewall , when the body shell  is being assembled , before welding

Oh that's why!  Okay that makes a lot more sense then.  I'll just remove the ugly caulk and weld the holes shut.  This cowl is not going anywhere.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing too. I didn't want to remove it w/o knowing the importance of it.

You just answered my question, what color is the fan supposed to be.  Looks gloss or semi gloss black from here.

Its pretty close, if not exactly, the same paint as the heater box.

There are panel alignment holes under those spots of sealer.

I should have a nice black to match that.   

I'm not sure if I should just weld the holes shut or put another dab of caulk on there after primer and before paint.

Neither.  If your bay turns out nice, those holes will never be noticed or thought about again.

I used gloss black High Temp Engine Paint on my 73 since mine sits almost directly over the back of the exhaust manifold.

Neither.  If your bay turns out nice, those holes will never be noticed or thought about again.

Thank you for asking the question, Dino. I've been meaning to ask it for years, but kept forgetting. I saw a pic, I think on the First Gen site, with the wiper squirt line running through the passenger side hole.

Yeah that would work I suppose as long as the hose doesn't move within the hole.

I had mine that way for a very long time on my first 68 Charger.
