I was driving the car home Thursday, at a stop sign, I accelerated moderately and there was immediately a big bang that shook the whole car, even popped open the glove box.  Long story short, there is now a nasty noise coming from the rear end housing, predominantly on the left side.  I shot a short video, the sound I'm not liking shows up at 13 seconds.

I have a 68 Charger 440 automatic with what I think is 3.23 open gears, with the 742 case.  They are spinning in the same direction now though.

What does a rebuild cost?  I've never messed with axles and a differential before.

My guess would be a differential spider gear shaft. If there is no damage to the ring & pinion or any other parts, it's a good excuse to install a Sure-Grip....wouldn't require an entire rebuild.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I like the way you think John!   I'll have to take it apart and see what the damage is.

Ian, if your are looking for a low buck fix, you should be able to find an entire 3.23 gear chunk one-legger for maybe $100 or so.

Right on Mike, that'd be helpful.  I've not been able to find anything on Craigslist.

You need a DANA 60!

That's what I'm talking about!  My cousin told me "it's time to upgrade to a ford 9" rear end " - Hell NO!
In all reality, I'm looking to replace this..

Question:  Would a early sign of failure be that my axles were rotating together in the same direction?
I'd noticed this recently I think and I've been leaving dual rubber marks the last few months...   :drive:

Dr. Diff is on vacation this week, I'll give him a call next week for a quote.   I plan on replacing it for now, down the road I'll save some coin to rebuild my broken one with a Sure Grip.

I'm not a mechanic but I think that a quick tac weld and your back in buisness.

Be sure to ask Doc if that Powr-Lok unit includes a center thrust block for stock axles...he usually steers people towards the Green bearings that don't need a thrust block.

Go to Randy's ring and pinion. !!
Either way, your looking at 1200 bucks and up for a posi.

I'm working on putting this back together this weekend.  RalleyMike was able to help me find a replacement, Thanks Mike!
The left side axle bearing cup is loose off the bearings, is there a way to put this back together?  Does the collar need to be smacked down?  Or does this need to be replaced?

From the picture it's not possible to say for sure that the inner race of the bearing is seated all the way or not. It looks like this is not a new bearing or shaft and it most likely is just fine.
The flange that holds the axial in the housing will seat the outer bearing race and is also part of the bearing clearance adjustment. It looks normal to me from the pic.

BTW trying to smack the collar down (with a hammer I presume) is not a good idea. The press fit of the bearing and collar are rather tight and without a proper press you would likely do more damage than good.

grdprx

Ya, they looked ok when I disassembled it, but there was a lot of end play on the drivers side as I was trying to figure out the whole adjusting thing on the right side...  It's an open differential.

grdprx

I had a blonde moment. I re-read the FSM, I was doing it wrong.  All good now.

RallyeMike

.. Yea looks normal to me. Back to terrorizing the street soon... just in time for the fall monsoon :drive:
