I went and looked at a potential project today. It's a 70 charger. The vin threw me off. It was XH29L. I always thought Chargers were XS and XP? Does L code mean 440? I thought I knew how to read one of these but apparently not!
Thanks in advance!

Yes, I know I have too many cars. My wife reminds me daily.

In 1970 XH29 was the base model Charger.  XP29 was Charger 500, basically a 'standard' Charger.  And XS29 was still the R/T.

Engine code L in 1970 - 383 2 bbl.

You're thinking of 69's Marshall.  ;)

That's because 69's are the best!  ;)

The 383 is usually found in the 70 XP 500 then the XH base model. only 1434 made in the 70 XH model. LEON.

Ghoste

1434 XH or 1434 XH with a 383?

Ghoste

Perfect.  Still low production of course, but it had me wondering because if it was just 1400 total for the XH and you had to figure the 318 outsold the 383 then the potential was there for 383 ones to be even less.  But 1434 is still low.

Hey my 3spd 383 4 bl is one of 37 (not column shift).  I can see the $$ now.

If only it had a tuff wheel, then it would be 0 built

Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Bronzedodge

Oops - my bad.  Yes, 383 4 bbl in 70 is N.  I was looking at a faded, disintegrating "pocket vin identification" that's been in my wallet for 20 years.   ;D

All isn't lost, you still have a good base to build from.  You know, paint it red, throw on some big wheels, maybe add some cool graphics...  ;)

marshallfry01

So what engine did it have originally? I'm still confused on the L for the engine.

In 1970 the "L" indicates a 383 2-bbl, in 1969 its a 440-4.
