4-speed jumps out of 4-th gear

I bought my 4 speed from Passon Back in 06 . Not a lot of miles on it but on deceleration it pops out of 4th gear . When it was purchased , it was the last one he had . A display one with the cover off . They reinstalled the cover while I waited . There is an a adjustment process when installing it right ? Could that cause my problem ?  That being said ,  I also have the wrong adapter plate on the trans for the shifter . And when I did this 4-speed conversion could only get the short linkage rods so had to lengthen them for my console car . Not sure if that would be an issue or not , but I think I`m gonna look for the correct linkage and plate . Any input would be great , thanks .

That would be the best place to start, linkage adjustment plays a big role and can easily have it not fully engaging.

I had a similar problem that was related to linkage with reverse in a 8 speed.  I would check that first.  Don't know enough of the details of transmissions in general to suggest the step after that.  Assume someone here will.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Linkage adjustment is a great place to start.

I all ways thought it was a linkage problem . Mainly because I modified it , and partly because I find it hard to believe a trans rebuilt by a reputable shop would have a problem so early . I will track down the correct parts and give it a try . Really hope that's it , don't want to pull it if not necessary . Thanks all for the input . :2thumbs:

Was the bellhousing dialed in? Bellhousing misalignment problems will often show up in 4th gear.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

No , I never did . And it`s a scatter shield so ....... probably should have .  :brickwall:

If the bellhousing is way off-center it cocks the input shaft in such a way that the synchro dog teeth don't properly engage.

I hope that's not it . Really don`t want to pull it back out .

unfortunatly, you cant check it with the trans installed. i would start with verifying the linkage on the 3-4 shift and go from there

I usually see this more with second/third gears, but if the "Dogs" on the actual GEAR are worn out, then a rebuild might not be the fix.

I`m hoping it`s just linkage misalignment because of the low miles on it , but we shall see .

Keep us updated on what you find. ..

So I finally got the correct linkage and mount plate for my car . It shifts WAY better , don`t have to force it and when it goes into gear you feel it  lock in . But , unfortunately it still jumps out of 4th on deceleration . But it is way better ,  so probably gonna leave it till it gets parked for winter and deal with it then .
