Hey all!

I've been hunting around for a 68 charger online and come across what seems to be a great project, very good body with a few spots to repair.

It needs a trans for a 440/4speed, interior and a few other bits here and there.

My question is, how easy is it to source 68 parts? I've found a few sites but they all seem to sell brand new or NOS parts. It doesn't help that I live in the UK so a lot of domains and sites won't show on a standard Google search.

There's a big Charger following in the Netherlands. Contact this guy and he can help you with some of your stuff and questions.

To be honest, a lot of used parts are, well, used (or is that "well used"?). Buying a "complete" car will often get you farther ahead than you'd think - until you get around to sorting parts into piles of "restore" or "replace". In many cases it makes sense to just buy new (as long as the quality is good). The selection of good reproduction parts is better than it has ever been in the past. As recent as 10 years ago, quality replacement sheet metal was almost non-existent. Now you can practically build an entire body.

However... not all parts are available new. Depending on the level of "restoration" you want, NOS is the better choice in most cases. Be prepared to pay the price for fairly rare - if not nearly impossible to find - parts. In general, finding an 18 spline 4-speed is relatively easy. Same for most drive line parts (that don't belong on a Hemi at least). Finding a nice condition 68 Charger grill is not. Good original taillight assemblies seem to have disappeared a few decades ago. Most interior vinyl and foam will be too degraded to really keep if the car was stored outside for any length of time.

Being overseas, I'm not sure what the tax implications are for you on used vs new parts. At least with new parts there's either a real (or implied) guarantee of quality. If you buy used it's "buyer beware" since you won't be able to see or touch the part before you pay for it. The advantage you have in Europe is that there are more shops who can repair old parts - because you haven't really had the ability to buy new or it was just too expensive to import them. Finding a shop in the US that doesn't just remove and replace parts is fairly hard.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

You can find alot of stuff on the US ebay pages or ask for the things you need over here.
I Always clearly tell a seller that I'm in Europe. Some people dont want to deal with people outside the US and thats their right. Lots of good folks around here to help you find the parts you need.

You can find alot of new parts from various vendors also. I have found out for example that Mega Parts stock alot of parts and Jamie is a true stand up guy who goes the extra mile for every customer even when located outside the US
Keep in mind that shipping charges can become outrageous when the packages get larger, so if you need new parts and want to buy them in the US order as much in one time as you can afford. The more you buy the more reasonable the shipping costs are.

If you need large sheetmetal parts or heavy drivetrain stuff you could Always contact one of the Euro Mopar vendors.
They ship parts in containers several times a year. The parts will cost more but you'll save alot on shipping costs.
And since they deal in Mopar stuff they all speak English.

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

From the u.k. mopar forum:

Just thought I would share with you my story regarding PTTM based in Joure in Holland ( http://www.pedaltothemetal.nl ) Muscle car sales.

As you guys know Ive just bought a very tasty Charger 440 R/T after about 12 months of looking for a decent model. In December I spotted what looked like a nice 383 4BBL XP29 model on their website. The car was described as "laser straight" and "immaculate paintwork" also "rebuilt 727" and "freshly rebuilt motor" .....Strong words in an advertisement which was later confirmed by the owner via email. I gave the owner a ring ( Fred ) and after several emails and various chats I left him a 10% deposit pending inspection of the car. I felt quite confident in doing so as it does state on their website that "All deposits are refundable pending inspection". The owner wanted me to pay in full via BACS - i was a little suspicious of this and told him no - I would leave the deposit and take the cash with me.

So i drove over there in January with my Touareg and trailer ( a similar trip to the Swedish one ) On arriving at the showroom I walked in and saw the car........I knew STRAIGHT away it wasnt the car for me. There were various marks / rust scabs all over the car. You could see in the light that the body had been poorly prepared before paint ( orbital sander marks that hadnt been feathered out / primed and flatted before paint ) various rust scabs / over spray in the door apertures and the entire paint job had "orange peel" all over etc etc - basically the car had received a $1000 dollar paint job in the states and shipped over to these guys. To top it off the engine wasnt a "freshly built motor" and it was leaking oil ( all around sump and bottom of block )

OK - I know these cars are coming on for 50 years old but £32000 for a premium xp29 in this condition is not worth it ( hence the car is still for sale after 5 months ) If the car was as described - he would have had my money - Hell I was itching to buy one !!

So after confronting his son ( Max ) and stating that i Didn't want the car as it was definitely not as described I was told to more or less F**k Off and I wasn't getting my deposit back. So i told Max that I wasnt leaving until I did as it does say in the terms and conditions of his website deposits are refundable pending inspection - Quote "BUYER WILL GET HIS DEPOSIT BACK, MINUS 10% OF THAT DEPOSIT" ( section 2 )

http://www.pedaltothemetal.nl/index.php ... conditions

So after a little stand off the Police were called and I was escorted off the premises - I was told by the police i would have to take the case up with a
lawyer. Needless to say the wording on the advert has changed considerably since solicitors have got involved ( I have a print off of the original )

Now Im £3200 out of pocket because of Fred and his lies. Ive taken the matter to the European Consumer Rights Agency who are chasing Fred for the deposit and Ive also got a solicitor involved.

So the motto of the story is....Sometimes as desperate as you are to get the car ( or anything ) of your dreams be careful who you give your money to. You work very hard for it and there are con men out there that will lie to you to get it. Always view a car first - Dont leave a deposit over the phone because you've been told that another buyer is also interested..........And be very warey of "Pedal to the metal"
