How hard is it to replace the right rear wheel bearing on a 69 with a 8.75" rear end?

Thanks

You will need a press.  Take it to a shop and have them replace them.  Doing it without the right equipment will not only damage the bearing set but can also damage the axle.

Remove the wheel and brake drum, remove 5 bolts on the axle flange, and slide the axle out.

Take the axle down to the shop to have new bearing and seal installed with a press.

Its a good time to replace the inner axle seal in the housing if its sketchy. If not - be careful when pulling the axle out or putting it in to not let the axle splines cut the seal.

Also, don't forget to grease the bearing before you install it. They are not lubricated from the diff oil as in some other axle designs  :2thumbs:

There is an inner seal, as others have said - you drive it into the axle housing - AND an outer seal, which goes between the axle retainer plate and the bearing.  If the outer seal goes bad, you'll grease your brake drums.   Been there.  :brickwall:  As the bearings press on, you must replace the outer seal at the same time.  The rear axle bearings actually get greased, similar to the fronts.  Just don't use too much.

Then there's the end play adjustment.  The adjuster is on the right axle usually and has a lock tab under one of the retainer bolts.  The spec is between .008" and .018".  Both wheels must be off the ground.  If you have thick or too much fresh grease you will get a false reading.  The Factory Service Manual says to tighten the adjuster and back off about 4 notches at the lock tab.

Ended up being a loose wheel if you can believe that. The bearing is fine. After closer inspection, the elderly lady that owned the Charger must have run the lugs loose more than once. The wheels holes were a little "wollered" out.

Well at least you caught it before the wheel fell off! great find!
