How wide tires do I need?

I got a '66 with LS7 engine (505 hp). How wide tires should I use to get the power to the ground without too much spinning. Local tire shop recommended 215/65/15 in front and 235/60/15 in the back. I also should let you know that I trying to keep a sleeper look for my Chevelle, so as stock looking wheels as possible, while still having decent traction.

Thanks for your advice!

I think it is going to be the rubber compound that will matter more than the width.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Assume you are asking about fitment for a '66 Chevelle, not a Charger?

With 505 hp it will depend on your right foot. Any size street legal tire will get shredded.

I'd get the widest that will fit correctly and look good and a soft compound.

A 66 Chevrolet with a ls7 has tones of power u should be able to fit a 345/45/20  size tire back there no mods at all direct fit.   :2thumbs:

If you're set on 15s and want a sleeper look, how about 8-9 inch wide wheels with street legal drag radials on them?  The soft compound will be much more beneficial than a wider wheel with a normal street compound would.

I doubt you drive in the rain much or need the cornering ability so that's the route I'd go in this case.

235/60/15 is a short tire. Tall tires, just like fat tires, provide more rubber contact with the ground and better traction.
