69's in Nascar '71 season

I'm well aware that back in this time period, Nascar allowed cars that were 3 years old to run in their series.  However, why did the teams that run 69 Chargers, run the base model Charger with the recessed grille and rear window, instead of the 500?

Dave Marcus done this as well as Tiny Lund.  One pic shows Marcus with the base Charger grille at Talledega.

Randy Ayers site has the pix:

the Aero Guys  :2thumbs: :coolgleamA:   will know for sure , have all the info etc   ,

I think its because all the aero cars were out lawed & or could only run a 305 motor for the 71 season ,

I await to be corrected on any of this  :2thumbs: :coolgleamA:

That would be the correct answer. While not illegal to run the horsepower penalty made it impractical. You will notice that in 71 that some guys got savy and pushed the grill out further than stock to get it closer to flush. Also when the gen 2 Charger first ran in 68 there was a lift issue due to the tunnel back window causing a bit of a vacuum . They had no rear spoiler to speak of in 68. The cars running in 71 had an additional aluminum spoiler added to the deck lid to help this out. Still not the best aero choice for 71 but with diminished factory support you had to do what you had to do.

Did the 305 engine rule apply to the 500's as well as the wing cars, or was it just the wing cars that got that engine?
