Checking The History of a Vin# for a Charger on Ebay

Hey guys,
I have been watching an Ebay auction for a beautiful 70 RT SE that the owner says is one of 3 ever built.
Now I don't doubt that is true I'm just wondering how the folks that have pushed the bid up to $175.000 and not met the reserve yet can verify that. 
The owner says he has all the documentation to prove it's accuracy and again please understand I am not calling him a lair I just am curious without having to contract him where I can find the history on this rare beast.
He has the Vin# posted and I have logged it into a couple of sites but come up empty.
I in now way have this kind of money and most likely will never be fortunate enough to have another Charger other than all the diecast ones I have but if I were to come into money someday and wanted to lay it down on another one I would like to be able to research it a bit more without having to fly out to another state to look at the car in person.

Thanks for sharing that as well as the welcome.
I see a lot of the guys don't care for green here.
I would prefer the interior to be black myself but I do like the exterior color.
I will keep an eye on the auction for fun and keep trying to find a way to get the cars history.

Yeah you and the others that pushed the bids up to 61 and 175,300 !!
The thing is it still did not meet the reserve. Now tell me if I am nuts here fellas but if you owned this car and decided you wanted to sell it and got a serious buyer to offer you 175,300 for it why would you not sell it? I understand this is a rare car but he did post it for sale.
Here is how I see it.
Sell it for the 175,300 and buy another one with a Hemi in it for $40 or $50 grand then bank the rest of the money and let it gain interest. This way you still have one of the baddest cars and my personal favorite on the planet and money in the bank too. Does that only seem to make good sense to me? I guess maybe I am still pissed at myself for selling my best Charger many years ago (a 70) and now know I will not get another one.
That is a long ugly story with lots of foul language in it.     

If this owner is looking for 200,000 for this rare package it is time to have it appraised and taken to Barret Jackson because that is the only place I would think he would get that kind of serious buyer.

Let me know your thoughts on this guys.

No one want's to feel foolish  and selling something like this with such a wide range in value would make anyone nervous.

Ask your self the question---If you needed to sell your car wouldn't you like to see it go for at least what the current market is for it.

This also could be a test to find value for the car.

Let's say the seller expected to see a bid to 125K.  When they see 175K come up they may wonder why not 190K.?  It's like gambling. no matter where it stops their will always be that question about where the top is.

Okay you got me there I should have said another 70 in the $60 to $70 Grand area then bank the rest. I know I let mine go a LONG time ago and prices have sky rocketed on these cars because I have seen things on Ebay for twice what I paid for my first 70 and to me what they are selling inst worth dragging off there property. Maybe I am really out of touch with what is happening in the Charger world but isn't there a lot of good quality after market parts available for the Chargers so you don't have to buy an over priced scrap pile to get a few good original parts?
It amazes me when I see a complete 70 front bumper and grill assembly selling for what I paid for my whole car. And trust me guys it was not a bomb it was in damn good shape and very low miles on it. I just went brain dead one day and decided to let it go to a Dodge dealer as a trade in for an 84 Daytona Turbo Z. I have not owned a Chrysler product since and I was born and raised on them. I have never regretted anything in my life more than letting that car go and if I had met my wife while I still had I would most likely have it in my garage right now because she would have not let me sell it.

You make a good point but if I were the owner expecting 125 then saw 175 I would start to think okay that is great but on the other hand you have to remember that something is really only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and if you Gamble for the 190 and don't get it the 175 may not be as interested now and you may have to settle for the 125 or keep it.
I do see the risk but again I think the 175.300 is a fair price unless the owner has documented appraisals at 200.000 then yes set the reserve at that number and stand firm on it..
I have never been in a situation like that so maybe my thinking is all wrong.

This car has been for sale for years. First mention of it was back in 2010.

The car is listed on a website called Car Collector and the asking price on that website is the exact same as the bid on Ebay. Not sure if they are connect somehow?

Keep in mind on eBay if he did sell it for $175,300 that's $17,530 that goes to eBay (10%) which brings the seller's take to $157,770.00. Also if there is any PayPal transaction for the purchase that is roughly another 4% of the total sale price which would be $7012.00. Now where at $150,758. Now that's if the money transaction is completely done thru PayPal. I would imagine that a different transaction for something that valuable may be handled differently. Or maybe a partial thru PP and the rest cash in hand or bank wire.

Something to consider when selling on eBay, but then again you do draw a very large captive audience in doing so.

Yes you are correct on the PayPal part of the trans action. I was watching another sweet 70 that the owner had up for a Buy It now of 38.000 after the first one of 42.000 did not go through because the buyer wanted to pay the whole bill through Paypal and that cant be done. The owner re listed the car again and wrote in big letters that it can not be completely paid for through PayPal only the $500 non refundable deposit. This I would think also helps with the fees being less and helping to get a closer final price which would be close to the asking price. I forgot that fees would be so high and dig into the final price like that.

Where you gonna find one for that Price with Hemi ? As for the Bumper & Grill you mention. Yeah, I cracked my grill & bent my bumper. Buying a OK condition one cost me $1,500. And I think back to the nice 70 Charger I bought in mid to late 80's for a lousy $150 bucks. Had rusty 1/4's & bad timing chain but had nice front bumper & grille & nice burnt orange interior. Sure wish I had it now for parts. LEON.

Let me clarify this.
When I said he got me on that and said what I should have said was another 70, I meant a non Hemi 70 for that kind of money. Those are out there. The bumper statement was referring to my 70 I bought in the early 80's that had been stored in a barn for 6 years and had 42,000 miles on it. I paid $1,500 for that car. My avitar picture is what it looked like the day I bought it.  All I had to do was put a front trans seal in it which the owner at the time helped me do and I drove it home. I then put a carb on it and then drove it from WV where I was living at the time back to Michigan when I left my first wife. The car had been painted a nice gloss black but originally was gold I believe. The interior needed very little work and there was absolutely no rust in that car anywhere. When I took it to have a new exhaust put on it the guys in the shop looked at me and said  " Man this aint no Michigan car, where did you get this from"  
I had it for about 8 months and drove it every day then went completely stupid and traded it in for a $1000 down payment toward an 84 Daytona Turbo Z. After that car put me into bankruptcy because of all the money I dumped into it just to keep it running and keep my job I surrendered it to the bank when the trans locked up for the 3rd flippin' time.  I then bought a rust bomb typical Mich B5 Blue 70 Charger for $400.00 and thought I could save it.  Wrong, it was way too far gone so after driving it for 6 moths with no trunk floor at all and rust on every panel I sold it for $400.00 to a guy that was restoring one. That Daytona was the last Chrysler product I have owned since and I was born and raised on Mopars but that was when I called them Mopars now they just build cars and I would not own another one over a 74 ever again.

My first car when I was 19 back in 1981 was a 68 Charger with a 383 in it and Magnum 500 Wheels. Paid $300 for it. She was a little banged up but ran great and everything worked. Not many guys can say there first car they bought with there own money was there dream car. I feel very fortunate to have had three 68's a 69 two 70's and a 72 though out my life. Some people that love these cars like we do may not ever have an opportunity to own one so again I hold those memories near to my heart because I know I will not own another one.
